Current Events > Disgaea games are on sale on Steam. Are they worth getting into?

I've never played any of them at all. I do like strat JRPG's (I enjoyed FFT, Triangle Strategy recently was a lot of fun, etc) but I've heard that the mechanics for these games get bizarre, like... leveling up an item by going inside it to fight the item or something?

My cousin loved the series and swore up and down it was the best RPG they ever played.

I never played it, but both of us likes Pokemon and he put it above that so.. take that as you will.

Yes, although the grinding aspect isn't for everybody. Although much of it is locked behind post game, so you can enjoy the main story without worry.

They arent very good, imo. The main story is a small part of these games and the main point of them is grinding.

They're ok. Play one and you've played them all. The story is barely there and the vast majority of the game is grinding to make the numbers go up.

If anything, it's a parody of edgelord shit.

They're good. The grinding is optional. You can beat the story with out excessive grinding, but post-game content requires hours upon hours of grinding. It's up to you if you're into that. The later games also add several more mechanics to deal with. Start with the original, and play the next if you enjoy it.

IMO the series tries too hard to be funny after the first game.

If I was gonna play just one, which one? Lol, all of them but 3 are on sale.

Yeah, 90% of the grinding is done on a single map.

I did enough post-game in D1 to beat the optional mega boss. I made a character who could take him out in like 2 hits, with five mages casting the attack boost spell on him. That was enough for me. I did not want to keep grinding until I could one-shot him on stats alone.

I say start with either 1 or 2. Also don't aspect a serious story with this series.

It's about making a super OP unit snd having them stomp everything. Playing it normally is just okay. The story is a bit too full of horse wieners for me, but they're overall a mix of taking itself overly serious and horse wiener goofiness.

I played the series on Steam for the first time earlier this year. A topic praising Disgaea inspired me to try it. Mostly everyone recommended Disgaea 5 and that felt like a good starting point.

The story was kind of weird, not gonna lie, but the gameplay was a lot of fun. There are a lot of mechanics, but the game gives you plenty of tutorials.

And the max level is 9999. I used cheat engine to reduce some of that postgame grind though lol. Had other games to play.

I played hour of darkness way back on ps2. I enjoyed it, amusing enough characters and story.

Like 8/10.

Start with 5. 5 was the first one I played. I actually played the demo on PS4 in 2015 thinking it was Dissidia since I got the names mixed up. I was like "wtf is this?" after I started it up. Played it anyway and fell in love and immediately bought the game. I don't even like strategy RPGs that much, but I LOVED Disgaea 5.

I will say though that after playing D5, it's extremely hard to go back to 1 or 2 just from all of the QoL features added by the time 5 came around. My friend had 1 on Steam and we tried it, and I was like "nah, it's too outdated." I think people say 5 is the best one in the series.

Alright I picked up 5. Dunno when I will get to it but it was like 70% off
