A skeleton discovered by teenagers earlier this summer from the River Coln in England has been identified as an African woman who died around 1,000 years ago, between 896AD and 1025AD. Now the question remains, how did it get there?

Police officers were called to an area of the River Coln in Fairford on 7 th July after school pupils Robbie Cribley and Christian Thompson discovered a human skull, followed by the rest of womans remains. The entire skeleton has now been recovered, except for the small bones of the hands and feet which are likely to have disintegrated.

The investigation was handed over to a forensic anthropologist who was able to confirm that the remains belong to a woman who was from Sub-Sahara Africa and aged between 18 and 24 when she died. They are now continuing in their analysis in the hope of discovering how she died.

A thousand years ago the region of Fairford and the surrounding area was embroiled in conflict as England was beginning to take shape from Anglo-Saxon Wessex but faced the threat of constant invasion from Danish controlled Mercia and Viking raiders. England fell to the Vikings in 1013 and was ruled by the House of Denmark until 1042.

"It's intriguing to imagine how a Sub-Saharan African woman came to be found 1,000 years later in the River Coln," said chairman of Fairford History Society Geoff Hawkes. "It really seems extraordinary. There is scattered evidence of, in early times, people travelling considerable distances but Africa to Fairford is a long journey."

It is hoped that further investigation will add more pieces to the puzzle.

That was my thought, though I believe at least one of the kingdoms on the island traded with the Abassid Caliphate and it's not unthinkable that she could have arrived there on one of their ships.

Why would they be confused when African people have lived in Europe since antiquity? Aristotle attests black people both in Greece and Sicily. The Romans moved people around, people didn't just stay in one place people tend to travel like today.

The DNA said that she was from Africa.
Not that she was 0.00003051757% from Africa.
If she was an ancestor to a black Roman slave that was left by the Romans, then she was at least 16 generations after that. Her DNA would be mostly British.
...unless you want to present a theory that we had an undocumented village of black people in England for over 500 years that kept their bloodline clean from white DNA...

More than likely, but she also could have been enslaved by Arab traders from the Abassid domains. The Vikings and Abassids really only ventured to sub-Saharan Africa to capture and sell its denizens as slave labor. The sad thing is that if she were somehow the exception to this, there's no way that we'll ever know.

There was a thriving trade-based kingdom in west Africa during that time (Ghana Empire).

It's quite possible that a merchant family traveled up to England to trade... and the wife died from some disease.

I mean, that's how churches would get their frankincense and myrrh (for example), because it's not native to England.

Impossible? No

Just highly unlikely, bizarre and impossible to explain an ironclad reason for why she would be there. All you can do is create hypotheticals. Like she was a Viking slave

Hence the confusion.

So there would be no reason for random African families to travel 10,000+ miles to the middle of no where England.

You have to create one from the ether. Hence the confusion. It's a mystery.
