When I worked in retail, I would say that maaaaybe like 5% might be bad? And that might be too high.

Most people are just in and out. Or at the bare minimum, they are polite if you help them. It is just that the assholes really stand out and can ruin the rest of your day.

Hard to give a percentage but it would be pretty low, vast majority was just simple transactions. Course the last time I worked in fast food was over two decades ago. I'm willing to bet things have gotten significantly worse after everyone forget how to act in public during covid.

It's not easy to forget about that one person who in any other circumstance would get punched in the mouth if they got super ugly acting in the same manner with someone who doesn't work at that joint.

I've worked in pizza delivery on and off since 2006 (most recently in 2020). I agree that it's 5% or less. Most customers don't put up a fuss, its just the ones that are a pain are more memorable.

If it is just someone being rude, then sure. But if it is someone that takes up a lot of your time, puts in a complaint, or does something to physically make a mess, it can make the rest of your day suck.

Yeah, I agree with the 5% estimate. Those 5% are pretty memorable in how terrible they are, though.

Like, 5%. Probably lower. Some for things that are memorable or annoying but don't cause harm. Like the guy who demanded burnt pancakes. Then leaned in and said, "now yall think you know what burnt is. But you don't. I want that baby charcoal. Just keep putting it in the toaster. I'll watch from here and tell ye when it's done." Never seen a man so happy to eat a chunk of charcoal.

There was a woman who always paid in pennies wrapped in tin foil. Another who'd ask for her coffee "Black, Half Creamer". And one time a man threatened to shoot us and claiming we stole his wallet. (Okay, maybe not so harmless on that one.) Oh, and like 30 people a day who thought they were very special and unique for coming up to the counter to ask for directions to a competitor before ordering their food.

Maybe I've been lucky, I've done roughly 20 years of retail management and working with the public. Sometimes I'd go weeks without an issue with anyone. It's always the older generation when it is, but it's a lot more rare than I anticipated.

I worked at a Best Buy 15 or so years ago during the holiday season. It was mostly ok except for Black Friday. What a nightmare.

Well.. for context i was in the Customer Service dept at the store so its unfair since most of my job was dealing with customer issues and i could handled most of them no problem, usually it was the worst of the worst that went "CAN I SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER" On me... and in the case of wealthier area's its hard to say, middle class were usually the easiest to deal with, poor could be hard but most of the time they just wanted to break even or some form of solution.. the Wealthy and rich tended to be the ones who pushed for compensation for the littlest things or inconveniences, even if it was their own fault.. but that's just generalizing and i will admit its alot easier to remember bad interactions that good most of the time

10%, maybe more, I try not to pay attention.
I work Starbucks in a low income area. It got better when ebt was dropped and people accepted it.
Starbucks customers have entitlement issues for sure.
Interactions amongst different classes is almost the same, but different angles.
As the guy above me said, rich people just want to be right. They'll call managers and try to get you in trouble.
Low class people seem to try to get something for nothing or more for their buck. I've noticed offering to call managers seems to make them go away.
People have no patience in the Starbucks world. I have people give me the finger or call me names when i don't serve them water immediately. They'll literally talk over my customers. Only sometimes will they then start to talk more nicely when they get what they want.
retail has made me dislike people, but not give up hope.

Very few tbh.

It's quite common to have ones that are just kinda meh - not actively rude or mean but just kinda exist and don't talk - but very rare for me to encounter ones who are actively being dickheads (even if you include cases where it's probably not intentional).

Compared to the sheer volume of people that go through the place I work it's probably under 5%. Day ruining level bad is actually pretty rare.
