Is it really a thing? Definitely sounds too good to be true. I stopped drinking sodas a couple years ago. It drastically helped in my weight loss. But if there really is zero sugar in soda. I might give it a shot again.

Obviously water is best but I'm pretty sure coke zero is way better for you than regular coke. The risks of coke zero are basically the same as drinking coke but without dumping 150% of your daily value of added sugars into your system with one bottle.

Basically the technology to make calorie-free soda has come a long way since most of the recipes for the original diet sodas were made. So Coke Zero taste a lot more like Coke than Diet Coke. But over the decades a lot of the diet sodas have developed their own consumer bases. A Diet Coke fan doesn't want something that taste close to Coke. They want the Diet Coke flavor they know and love.

So that's how you get two product lines that have the same goal but have different end results.

GP here. Diet and Zero sodas simply use artificial sweetners, which have come a long way over the years. You'll hear some people say nonsense like "it's just as bad/worse than regular soda!", and others that will say "it's like drinking water!". Of course, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Popular artificial sweetners like Sucralose and Aspartame have been shown to at least correlate with metabolic syndrome/obesity/insulin resistance (and thus eventually diabetes). This is pretty much undeniable. However, they are still much, much better for your metabolism than regular sugar, and they indeed are not metabolized as carbohydrates and don't contain any calories.

There's also the "cancer" argument, which did apply to older sweetners in outrageous quantities (some of which were unrealistic/literally impossible to consume). As of right now, there's no evidence that shows artificial sweetners currently in use, consumed in moderation, cause or correlate with cancer. This may change in the future as more studies become available. Also a lot of the evidence against sugar replacement was funded by, you guessed it, sugar lobby.

In short:
They're still bad for you.
They're much better than sugar for you.
They mostly don't have any calories and are not digestible carbohydrates.
They probably don't cause cancer if used in moderation.

Fun fact: I've sustained high ketone levels while consuming coke zero freely.

Did anyone else get to try Coke Life? Green version, sweetened with Stevia, it could be used as torture, one of the worst things I've ever drank.

Diet soda tastes so fucking nasty. The problem isn't that they use sweeteners (And if you like the taste, more power to you, it'll still rot your teeth but at least it won't make you overweight), its that they don't use modern sweeteners that taste closer to sugar. I can't stand diet soda because it tastes both very chemically, and very saccharine. I have a feeling people who think it tastes "exactly the same" have one of those weird genetic deals where they just can't taste the chemicals, but even then, it tends to taste like ten times sweeter than the normal soda to me.

So no, it's not exclusive to already diseased or obese people, not at all. Not only has a direct correlation between insulin resistance and sucralose consumption been identified on several, independant studies, but there's possible explanations of why that is.

We are all responsible of our words and you need to be very careful about making blanket statements like the one you made, which are on the same vein as "sucralose causes cancer". The knowledge is out there, you just need to look it up instead of posting unrevised beliefs.

Apparently it's mostly a branding issue. I think diet and zero are mostly identical. But diet is marketed to women. Zero sugar is marketed to men. For whatever reason, over the years, society I guess considers diet soda to be a women's drink

So soda companies started making Zero Sugar versions and telling men they can drink that. But it's like 99% the same drink

How dare you.

I would gladly drink a "woman's drink". Diet Coke is very different from Zero and regular.

From what I've seen (although we have fewer brands here), "Zero" Soda tends to use Sucralose as its main sweetner.

Coke Zero is way better than Diet Coke and I prefer it to CCC but I still think it's pretty noticeably an artificially sweetened soda.

I don't think I tried Coke Life but I have had Zevia, an older Stevia sweetened soda. I like it but it's really, really far from a sugar soda.

^ That. I read so many government published studies on nih.gov and all studies show both ends of the spectrum, with some saying it's linked to health issues, and others saying it's linked to health issues because the type of people that drown in diet drinks are the ones who continue to make poor choices anyway... Truth is definitely in the middle for sure- in moderation, along with eating healthily, it's fine.

You can't truly make zero sugar ice cream because it's in the milk and even if you specially buy reduced sugar milk it will still have some sugar.

But you can make zero sugar sorbets and other frozen desserts.

It's a chicken/egg thing. Are you more likely to become obese after drinking diet soda or more likely to drink diet soda if you become obese?

I wouldn't read much into that correlation. CICO is still the law of the land.

My husband got a variety case of these. We tried all three flavors (Cola, Root Beer, Dr Zevia) and they were fucking nasty. Literally tasted like they were entirely unsweetened. We tried giving them away. My parents didn't want them. None of our friends wanted them. Half the case went down the drain because people opened one to try it and "noped" hard. We had to crowd source getting rid of them by putting them out on the porch and advertising them as free to the FB neighborhood group. Zevia tastes nothing like the real thing.
