https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/press-releases/u-s-men-die-nearly-six-years-before-women-as-life-expectancy-gap-widens/
Boston, MAWeve known for more than a century that women outlive men. But new research led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and UC San Francisco shows that, at least in the United States, the gap has been widening for more than a decade. The trend is being driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the opioid overdose epidemic, among other factors.

In a research paper, to be published online on November 13 in JAMA Internal Medicine, the authors found the difference between how long American men and women live increased to 5.8 years in 2021, the largest its been since 1996. This is an increase from 4.8 years in 2010, when the gap was at its smallest in recent history.

The pandemic, which took a disproportionate toll on men, was the biggest contributor to the widening gap from 2019-2021, followed by unintentional injuries and poisonings (mostly drug overdoses), accidents, and suicide.

Theres been a lot of research into the decline in life expectancy in recent years, but no one has systematically analyzed why the gap between men and women has been widening since 2010, said first author Brandon Yan, a UCSF internal medicine resident physician and research collaborator at Harvard Chan School.

Life expectancy in the U.S. dropped in 2021 to 76.1 years, falling from 78.8 years in 2019 and 77 years in 2020.

The shortening lifespan of Americans has been attributed in part to so-called deaths of despair. The term refers to the increase in deaths from such causes as suicide, drug use disorders, and alcoholic liver disease, which are often connected with economic hardship, depression, and stress.

While rates of death from drug overdose and homicide have climbed for both men and women, it is clear that men constitute an increasingly disproportionate share of these deaths, Yan said.

Definitely true, but in general COVID was/is harsher on men because men are generally unhealthier, and COVID loves that shit

There's a lot more men than women that have earned themselves a Herman Cain Award too. Most chuds are men, and chuds love downplaying the dangers of covid up until their family is tweeting their obstinance for them while they dwindle away under a respirator.

No stats in the posted article, but they did suggest this:
But during the pandemic, men were more likely to die of the virus. That was likely due to a number of reasons, including differences in health behaviors, as well as social factors, such as the risk of exposure at work, reluctance to seek medical care, incarceration, and housing instability. Chronic metabolic disorders, mental illness, and gun violence also contributed.

There are plenty more jobs people work aside from nursing though. Teaching is also overwhelmingly female but a lot of schooling became online at the peak.

I dont recall news of teachers dying above average off the top of my head so probably not much happened in that field.

What's most notable is that before 2019, the top 5 causes of death in men were:
unintentional injuries(1), diabetes(2), suicide(3), homicide(4), and heart disease(5).

After 2019, it became COVID(1), unintentional injuries(2), drug overdoses(3), accidents(4), and suicide(5). Almost instantly, the health-related causes of death were overtaken.

The fact that suicide was above homicide and heart disease though is CRAZY. I'm guessing "unintentional injuries" is referring to work accidents, which is incredibly sad.

I also read somewhere that women generally get into the habit of seeing a doctor regularly earlier than men (due to pregnancy, etc.) and thus benefit more from early detection.

Probably accidents of any kind.

Cars, falling, being hit by something falling, etc.

But the interesting thing is that they separate "unintentional injuries" and "accidents" with both having a spot in the new top 5 causes of death... Definitely strange

I poked around the CDC and unintentional injuries is the big umbrella term. Accidents is something more specific.

Essential never really meant "essential" it meant "essential to the comfort of middle aged white suburban folk"

There was absolutely nothing essential about getting taco Bell at 12 AM and yet there they were.

I always thought Cancer and heart disease were always causes 1 and 2 for death in the US. Also what made Covid so deadly was that it largely preyed upon those already suffering with chronic diseases. Covid became the bullet that ended an already weak body.

The most widely operating jobs were probably restaurant kitchens and manufacturing, food production alongside retail/grocery. How many hospitals do you think exist that they eclipse every other essential position?

There was like a 2 week period where things were shut down. Then everyone who had to work in person went back. Your sample set is essentially everyone who wasn't some ass-sitting office worker, and nurses are only a small part of that.

The sentiment might be more prevalent online I admit, but every male is painted as a potential psycho, pedo, rapist, etc. They can't engage with kids the women can. If they're on a playground, they're automatically a suspicious character. If you're walking down a street at night, every woman has to assume you're there to murder them. You're basically a bad guy until you can prove your innocence. And all that goes double if you're unattractive.
