Roughly one in three young shoppers in the U.S. has admitted to giving themselves five-finger discounts at self-checkout counters, a new survey shows.
According to loan marketplace LendingTree, 31% of Gen-Z consumers have stolen items from self-checkout kiosks, compared to 15% of consumers of any age. Those figures come as businesses work to combat shoplifting, which some retailers have blamed for hurting their financial performance and even for store closures.

No. I grocery shop weekly. Every once in awhile I will go every other week. Use it all the time. Have always been honest. I even put my coupons in the little deposit area for them even though you could keep them and reuse them easily. I have zero respect for thieves no matter your circumstances.

I accidentally took a case of sweet teas that I had put under the cart and forgot to pull it out and scan it.

I've had enough stuff that they scanned but didn't bag in the regular checkout (then I get home and find it's missing), or advertised discounts failed to register and I had to pay full price etc. that I'd say the store is still ahead in terms of robbing me.

I hate super detailed poll options because then, you exclude some choices. I've never stolen from self-checkout before. But I'm sure at some point, things I've done could have been considered stealing. Not an intentional steal though as I'm not a thief.

Reminder: It's a moddable offense to admit to criminal activity on this site.

Not sure if there's a differentiation between past and current usage. Such as "yeah, I stole some stuff 10 years ago" to "yeah I stole some stuff today". I've seen people talk about past drug usage, however my understanding is if you were like "I'm high on heroin right now", that would be moddable.

If I'm wrong and a mod wants to better inform me, then by all means.

Depends on the item. I used to have a friend who would steal Yu-Gi-Oh cards by stacking them on top of each other, so he may have 2-4 in his hand, however is only charged for the bottom one that scans, with the rest covered by his hand.

Usually there's 1 attendant for 6-8 self-checkouts and are also responsible for approving of alcohol sales, sometimes having to physically walk to the station to enter information.

Here in the UK that would certainly trigger a 'weight error' as after each scanned item you put it on what is effectively a set of scales that will cry and break down if you are 0.0000001 grams out of what it thinks it should weigh.

Even in sports?

A sports ball in an arena is considered equal property. Anyone potentially has the right to it at any given action sequence.

Say the Quaterback throws a pass and the defenders intercepts the pass the returns it for a touchdown. Within the laws of the sport that isn't stealing the ball. Now lets say the defender intercepts the pass then runs home with it and play Nintendo. Then that is stealing the ball.

The same could be said if a player chooses to hold on to the ball for a period of time they aren't eligible to have the ball or if they just take the ball and run around aimlessly with it delaying the game. These would be examples of stealing.

Given these defined parameters I can say that I have never stolen the ball during a sporting event.

Yes. Ive rescanned the same item multiple times and the dumb thing wouldnt recognize the bar code, so I just shrug and put it in my bag and scan the next item. Has happened a few times over the past decade.

Not my responsibility as a consumer to get your stuff to work.

And to be clear, I mean five or six or seven times and trying to flatten the thing and at multiple angles and distances, not a once and whatever thing.

All kinda methods. The one I've had most luck with is putting some items at the bottom of the shopping bag(under the weird lining thing some bags have to help the bag keep shape) I can fit whole steaks under there and have it look fairly innocuous

You can also just leave items in the bag but if any staff walks over and looks, as unlikely as that is, they'll see everything

Place the bag on the other side of the checkout to where the scale is, go about things normally with a few cheap items you're happy to pay for to reduce any suspicion

And only after paying do you bring the bag over to the other side with the scales and then load everything else into it

Oh and just shoving small things in your pocket from the shelf has a 99.9% success rate. Can't remember the last time I paid for paracetamol or antihistamines

Cameras are meant to counter/dissuade this but after working in retail I learnt there's not one guy just staring at them 24/7 like the mall cop on the Simpsons who catches Bart lol, at least here in Australia.

Its more that people will go back and check them if they notice something big missing or there's a major incident. Usually days later

I think some specific items get an extra special security tag placed on them that will beep, probably more expensive stuff than a toothbrush, but you can peel those tags off anyway
