They had a solid lock on most cultural/social issues in this period. However, since the 90s, they're slipping. They have a hard time winning elections nationally, as the internet/social media spread, their hold on the culture loosened, the fact that places that usually skew conservatives (more rural-based communities) got absolutely gutted by free trade and the 08 recession, then mix in 20-30 years of radicalization from 24 hour media like Fox and viola --- Not removing this until Mega Man 64 is released on the Wii Virtual Console. People are living entirely different, incompatible narratives, with each other cast as the villains. I'd say a mixture of Reaganomics helping make things suck for non rich people and the abolition of fairness doctrine being in place when alternative news sources started to proliferate. We're seeing groups of people living in totally different worlds with exclusive "facts" and figures. This is why you have people angry at Kenyan Muslim Obama and the coastal elites because "they" want to take our guns and our gas stoves and Jesus!!1!! They aren't being fed facts, they're being fed propaganda and many lack the critical thinking skills to distinguish lies.
