The two party system has been in place for centuries, but the current division that exists is at an all-time high. Even though the country was fully united shortly after 9/11.

What happened after that got us to where we are today?

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Basically, we're voting against project 2025, voting to restore reproductive rights, voting against the person who was found to be liable of rape, and said same person continues to paraphrase Hitler.

That means voting for Biden. Even abstaining or voting 3rd party enables the above.

Conservatives formed the "silent majority" starting with the Nixon years and stretching through the 1980s. They had a solid lock on most cultural/social issues in this period.

However, since the 90s, they're slipping. They have a hard time winning elections nationally, as the internet/social media spread, their hold on the culture loosened, the fact that places that usually skew conservatives (more rural-based communities) got absolutely gutted by free trade and the 08 recession, then mix in 20-30 years of radicalization from 24 hour media like Fox and viola

Smartphones and broadband internet access became affordable in the late '00s-early '10s and suddenly millions and millions of Americans with no media literacy or knowledge of politics became easy targets for misinformation and propaganda campaigns.

The seeds were planted with 24-hour news cycles and post-9/11 paranoia but as awful as it sounds, too many people were given too much access to the internet, on devices that are too affordable and too easy to use.

People are living entirely different and separate lives and have little insight into how others live because our living areas, media consumption, work, etc is increasingly segregated and atomized. People are living entirely different, incompatible narratives, with each other cast as the villains. And some of these people are doing truly villainous things, but it's mostly for the benefit of the true villains. Capital. All of it is geared towards keeping them on top and keeping social movements that could disrupt them from forming due to a lack of solidarity.

The country is a tiny bit less divided than the time it went to war with itself to decide whether slavery was bad. Not much, but a little.

I'd say a mixture of Reaganomics helping make things suck for non rich people and the abolition of fairness doctrine being in place when alternative news sources started to proliferate. We're seeing groups of people living in totally different worlds with exclusive "facts" and figures. This is why you have people angry at Kenyan Muslim Obama and the coastal elites because "they" want to take our guns and our gas stoves and Jesus!!1!!

They aren't being fed facts, they're being fed propaganda and many lack the critical thinking skills to distinguish lies. This is why you have poor people giving their last dollar to super successful multi billionaire Trump because he needs your help.

A bonus point for the internet exposing people to a lot of information.

Urban/rural split along with racial diversity. Republicans starting leveraging these to their benefit in the 1960s, with Democrats following suit in the 1990s, ultimately leading to the division we have now.

PBS answered this: journalism died.
So much came with that, but those two words sum it up.
People get news much differently now, so the division is greater. We're gonna have to define what democracy is or the divide may continue to grow.

It was all Fox News. They started going crazy 24/7 attacking democrats in election seasons. Then they started doing it all year and started just straight up lying.
When an average person who watches Fox News often hears how democrats are destroying our country literally told hundreds of times a day and told how bad they are, then count every day for years it literally becomes brainwashing.

Fox News only has about 3 million viewers. Their influence is overstated.

But more importantly: Fox News wouldnt be popular if they didnt tell people what they already want to hear.

The media has spent the last few decades doing their best to muddle the actual news while bombarding people with opinions passed off as news and facts, Fox news especially has been guilty of this while also trying their best to slowly demonize their political opponents and paint them as "THE ENEMY" to their viewers at first starting off pretty low key about it then ramping it up over the years

It started when some rich Republican sociopaths got permanently pissed off by Federal taxes in the New Deal era.

These assholes stewed in their own juices until the civil rights realignment showed them a way to get votes for their agenda of cutting taxes for the rich by pandering to the resentments of bigots 'betrayed' by the Democratic party.

The Reagan election in 1980 was the first big victory of this new, proto-fascist version of the GOP. Since then the misrule by Gingrich, W Bush, Trump and various other worthless GOP assholes has mostly amounted to working out the details of a transformation of the party from proto-fascist to fascist.

Is it the aggressive stupidity, the bigotry, performative religious zealotry by hypocrites, tax cuts only for the rich, and/or submitting to Putin?
