Is that intentionally hard coded in or an accident?

They coded it so that no offensive moves of the same type as the target can inflict secondary effects. It's also the reason why Twinneedle can poison poison types.

Apparently gen 1 was riddled with all kinds programming errors. It's kind of amazing the game was still so popular

It feels like Moltres was an afterthought in gen 1.

Zapdos and Articuno were basically the secret boss battles of two dungeons.

Moltres is just randomly sitting in Victory Road

Pokemon became popular IN SPITE of GameFreak, not because of them.

And also it looks like Fearow while the other two are more distinct. And then Ho-Oh did what Moltres does but way better. And then Stealth Rock showed up.
Moltres is just unlucky in general.

I wonder if thats how all those rumors about how to catch Mew and other Pokmon started before the internet days. Im pretty sure that you can get any Pokmon to spawn by doing some random inputs.

Double-checking, no. The glitch is only present in Red and Blue.

BTW, you can do this with the other stones too. Exeggutor for Moon Stone, Onix for Water Stone, and Psyduck for Leaf Stone. As for the Fire Stone, it's a specific version of Missingno (hex 20, or a special stat of 32 using the Mew Glitch).

Moves in Gen 1 are coded to not be able to inflict status on Pokemon of the same type. Ostensibly, this is so that Electric types can't be paralyzed with Thunder Wave and the like.

Body Slam just happens to be the only move in Gen 1 that can inflict a status not normally tied to its type (edit: and Twinneedle).

Pretty sure you can Thunder Wave Electrics in Gen 1. I know you can in Gen 3 4 and 5.

Status only moves are coded differently than secondary status moves so apparently yes you can paralyze an Electric type with thunder wave in gen 1

They complained buy still bought and beat it. Clearly they didn't care.

Yeah there are some crazy glitches in Gen 1 of Pokemon. I seem to recall a speedrunner who found some weird exploit glitch where you can get yourself into the Hall of Fame and "beat the game" in like, 10 minutes, or something weird like that.

Gen 1 of Pokemon also didn't really tell you what half the moves did. I still remember putting Dragon Rage on Gyarados thinking it was some ultra-powerful move and then wondering why it was doing no damage (it was, after all, the only Dragon-type move in the game). Then of course I find out through subsequent generations (I think Gen 3 was the first gen where they started describing the moves to you) that it did fixed damage, essentially meaning that it got weaker as enemies got stronger, lmfao.

And then they rated it lowly. You can only know about bugs if you wait, which obviously never happened, so sales means basically nothing in this context.

OoT is used in the same way to break Paper Mario.

That's pretty nuts that you can glitch the game like that. It's amazing, because although people have figured out so many wacky exploits with this game, I still remember playing it and having a great time!

I still love the memory of telling people how to do the Missigno glitch.

Like, my neighbor from back then would take in foster kids, so I was hanging out with one and explaining it as he followed along.

He was pretty clearly like 30 seconds from taking a swing at me for making him jump through all those dumb fuckin' hoops and then a level 125 Snorlax appeared and he was instantly cool with me.

It's crazy how all of these bugs and glitches made it into Blue. It's as if there was zero quality assurance and assumed nobody would ever care for 20 years.

Pokemon development was pretty shoddy, I don't think they ever expected it to be the hit it was, and the production values reflected that. Even in Gen 2 there's stories of I think Iwata having to do a bit of computer magic to make the games fit in time

The games are so broken that you can literally program a virus that will infect other copies of Red and Blue when trading Pokmon with another player so that youre able to catch Mew under the truck in Vermilion City.

Plus for Beedrill, you either have Twinneedle, which is the equivalent of a 50BP move or Pin Missile, which has 14BP per hit. So at most you'll get a 70BP move, but most of the time you're just getting a 28-42BP move. Both options are horrible >_>

At least Galarian Moltres was cool, even if it was just a weaker Yvetal. No clue how it did competitively compared to the rest of the trio though.

Im learning about gen 2 glitches now.

Had no idea how easy it was to get all three starters at the start of the game. Im invincible now.

That's not the only reason why it sucked. The atk / sp. atk split based on type(s) was dumb and I am glad it ended after Gen 3, which was way too long all things considered. The more I look back at the first few Gens the more they seem terribly designed, especially OG Gen 1 and Gen 2.

This was always kind of messed up considering Farore's name was the only one that was forgotten and changed with time.

Moltres' learnset being the result of an oversight doesn't hurt its overall moveset since it does get Fire Blast regardless. Its moveset is ass because it's gen 1 and the normal types and Nidoking/queen stole all the good moves from pretty much everyone else.
