Remake of a 1980s TV mini series, which in turn was based on a famous novel. I think the plot is a British guy in the 1600s washes up on a Japanese beach after surviving a shipwreck. People say the 80s mini series was a masterpiece still remembered today. And the makers of this remake are trying to live up to its legacy

Basically, it's about an English ship pilot ending up in Japan during a period of Civil turmoil, and he ends up getting roped into the plot of a high ranking Samurai warlord's efforts to reunify the country, while also dealing with Spanish catholics attempting to kill him (the Englishman) and bring the country under Catholicism.

Yeah. I'm white, and it's not a racial thing, I just wish they would not feel the need to do that. I understand that there WERE Europeans in Japan at various points, so I get that. I just get a bit tired of the whole Dances With Wolves shtick.

I'd love a series on someone like Oda Nobunaga or Ii Naomasa. Reading about them, their lives seem fascinating.

Or know their history. They had priests visit and the Japanese tried to tamp down teaching of Christianity. They stayed about 2 years were pretty much prisoners then went home. The priests sailed around the world pretty much. They ended up back in spain I believe.

In this case, it's accurate to the source material. And to be fair, this is considered a safe bet to studio execs, since the original miniseries has a following.

John Blackthorn is the protagonist but it's only partially his story. The core of the story is Yoshi Toranaga's meneuverings.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm super surprised that this is getting a remake.

The "mighty whitey" trope has been disparaged for decades now. I see both sides of the argument, honestly. It's racist to have a white dude walk into a foreign country and suddenly become Superman. It's also kind of racist to say that you can only ever be a hero to your own people.

I guess the truth of the matter is that mainstream audiences still won't watch movies with all-Asian casts, so we need a white samurai to be the lead even in the 2020s. If it's done well, it's done well. At least a white sailor washed ashore in Japan is the premise and they're not inserting him into a preexisting Japanese story.

There are many occasions you can make a "white savior" argument for things, but this isn't one of them. Other than bringing a unique perspective to warfare and general naval knowledge, Blackthorn isn't particularly the most vital element of the story; Toranaga is.

Plus, the story isn't completely accurate to history, but it's inspired by it. The guy Blackthorn is based off actually did have a part in history.

It's definitely a fiction, but the two most prominent European characters in the novel (Blackthorn, the main character, and Father Alvito, the primary Portuguese Jesuit) were based on historical figures that spent significant parts of their lives in Japan before/during the establishment of the Tokugawa regime. Hell, a major part of why Europeans have been able to have Japanese translations is because of said priest.

Why not mention that instead?

I watched the first episode last night on Disney Plus (nowhere else to see it in Japan as far as I know). My wife didn't care for it, but I thought it was alright. I will probably watch the rest. The NHK Taiga Drama last year was about Ieyasu so I think she might just be burned out on that period (and also the replacement names and fictionalization made it confusing for her to follow). I am curious if this will be popular in Japan, haven't heard anyone talking about it.

If you like historical fiction, then Shogun is peak that. Give it a shot, it's a great book.

EDIT: Taiko and Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa are also gems, too. For Musashi, there's a manga adaptation by the name of Vagabond, too.

Introducing Fuji (I can't remember if that was her name in the novel, I assume it might've been) and Mariko early was an interesting creative decision. Having Mariko empathize with Fuji's grief and desire to die will be important later on, and Fuji herself ends up being given over to Blackthorn to be his wife later on.

EDIT: Oh okay her name was Fujiko.

No, he wanted to kill himself. He instead gets crucified. Toranaga was far crueler to him in the novel, forcing him to crawl to his execution because he'd lost the right to walk as a human does through his thoughtlessness.

Yeah I was surprised Fujiko was introduced so early, but they may as well (I mean, when she did finally appear in the book they act like she was always there). It's not the only 'new' scene, either (I mean, they are going 10 episodes, they may as well).

White dude isn't superman. He's essentially a reader/viewer insert. As he learns about the culture, so do you. He's also based on a real person involved in the historical events that Shogun fictionalizes.
