the tried and true method of repeating the same mistakes expecting a different result. When the punishment costs less than the fix and/or not immediately evident (let's be real you can get away with this for 50+ years and they know it) -- or worse, no regulation at all -- people absolutely will not hesitate to take advantage of that. You simply cannot rely on people choosing to do the 'right' thing, especially so when the 'right thing' thins their pockets.

True, but it's kind of a universal truth. I'm supposed to do the right thing and pay for public transport, but I don't because at worst you'll get fined 3x $200 (if lady luck isn't on your side) in a year if you travel to/from work every day versus $10 to/from everyday for ~300 days a year.

From 2004 - 2024, I have paid exactly $5,745 in public transport by way of fines. As long as you pay them within 180 days there's literally no consequence (if you don't pay in time they'll suspend your driver's license) and being state debt it doesn't end up on a credit report here.

Better still if you have a mental health condition you can get what's called a WDO where you're forced to see a psych and they reduce your state debt by $1k for each appointment until it's paid. Crazy.

the irony is you can almost guaranteedly bet that some or most of them screech about "respecting muh heritage"

when part of their heritage is the regulations they're railing against

Those coal towns are both fascinating and depressing.

Their entire livelihood in that area depends on the coal industry most of the time. So yeah I'm a little bit sympathetic when they see these towns they grow up in absolutely shrink, crumble and decay due to major economies gradually shut down and leave. An economy that likely has given them all the skills that they know.

But these coal companies are complete trash as well. They do not have the interests of people as a priority. So they're fucked either way.
