I was under an NDA for that time period.

You can always pull the personal family emergency card.

None of their fucking business honestly, they are trying to find out how desperate you are to need to be working all the time, they want people who will take more hours and be less likely to leave or report abusive or unsafe conditions.

I get this question all the time. I am a Recruiter (IRL), so here are a few:

1) "I took some time off to take care of my ____ (<-- insert mom or dad here)"
2) I took some courses and got some licenses to help me with my career path"
3) "Yes, the position was actually a Contract role. It was a great company and opportunity but unfortunately they were unable to extend me"

Just fucking lie, make up something that they can only get shallow confirmation on, just enough to seem legitimate. An example that actually happened to me: I was 1st party tech support with a downsizing company that was slowly booting everyone noncritical and moving operations down to Chili.

The name and location come up, it has a website. I wasn't even with them for long, but I expanded that gap to cover far more time, during my depressed hobo period.

Because if they see you have a 6 month or a 12 month gap on your resume, they want to know WTF you were doing.

Imo I think there's more weight on the employer as opposed to the applicant on handling that one.

But it's not supposed to be a "let's see what they come up with".

I mean maybe I'm just speaking for myself, but I'd just want the honest answer vs looking for one to consider validated, and then just get constructive with other questions that follow after.

If you told me you left your previous employer on poor terms, you'd have the floor to articulate it (if allowed to). Apart from nothing crazy like "I threatened to shoot up the place", I'd probably be more focused on how you navigate that conversation.

The meme is that you are under contract to not disclose what you were working on.

The issue with the meme is that no nda is ever going to be that strict. You're still going to be able to list previous employers, you're still going to be able to talk about in general what you did even if you cannot get into any specifics.

Defeats the purpose of the meme, the point of it is to just hand wave away the question in a way that they cannot verify anything. Once you list your friend as your previous employer you're already making it far easier to catch.

It's just a dumb meme but it's one that I do fear people might actually try and cause themselves to bomb an interview they would have otherwise crushed.

Wtf is a gap in a work history? You're not writing a novel of your life just put work experience that is relevant to the position you wish to have. If the "gap" was just before you applied just say you were working in a different field you know lie like everyone else. Not like they can look it up.
