This is dumb for a couple of reasons.

"Just stop hundreds of millions of people worldwide from buying all mainstream games ever released ever." is impossible and you know it.
That still wouldn't solve the fact this is unsettled law (At least outside the US) and would just kick the can down the road. A big part of the goal here is just to make a clear distinction for consumers.
If no one bought games like The Crew then Ubisoft would just stop making them. They wouldn't go "Hmm, sales are low. So let's not kill this one" they'd kill it even faster
True

Papa Asmond said similar things

See my free and easy solution:
That's a historically great solution but it's a bit naive to think it's still that easy. I guarantee there's tons more proprietary tech, which a developer might still be using, and third party middleware, which requires a license, bring used nowadays that'd make this much more difficult to pull off.

I think about Star Ocean Ananmesis every single day of my life and I will never not be mad about it. I will tell my alien grandkids on my deathbed about one of the most fucked up events of human history, SOA's closing, with nothing but hate in my eyes.
I still feel the pain of the official phantasy star universe servers shutting down.

On the xbox 360 version of the game the expansion ambition of the Illuminus was DLC, and so it's story mode could not be played offline. (The PS2 version had this DLC as a disc release, but that version ran like ass in comparison). The vast majority of this game's content was for the online portion of the game, so even if you had that PS2 disc for this part you are just playing a few story related missions and I believe the updated combat system, but all the new photon art attacks/bullets/magic/rare weapons, the new weapon types in general and equipments/the room decorations, just all that content in general was for the online mode only.

I busted my ass leveling all the photon art attacks, all the bullets, all the magic to level 50. Found a ton of rares that I powered up, had my room decked out with the rarest decorations and styles, had all of the rare clothes/outfits you could get in the game via events and whatnot, like I put a good bit of hours into phantasy star universe. All of that stuff went poof into the void once sega shut down the official servers.

Like there is no good reason why phantasy star universe did not have a system where you can have a copy of your online character with all of your possessions+being able to download all the new missions as they added them for offline play since some sort of offline system (playing as that dude ethan for the base story mode for the original game, and actually being able to create a character and play some of the missions that was also online in that free mode I think it was called) already existed for this game. Just wiped out.

For a farther kick in the ol' nuts, sega created a portable version of phantasy star universe called phantasy star portable for the psp.......phantasy star portable 2 in specific and it's japan-only expansion/sequel phantasy star portable infinity was straight up better than the console+PC phantasy star universe in every single way aside from graphics. Like, they found a way to add this combat roll just for the portable version lol, and the way the gameplay+photon arts, the classes and so on just felt so much better in the psp games and all of them supported offline play to the fullest with nothing missing, =/

It's easy to release. I didn't claim it would be easy to get a private version running but if there's enough interest in a community they'll figure it out. A lot of stuff could probably be hard coded for middleware things. Like bool CheckIfSubscriptionIsValid { return true; } instead of whatever APIs used to be in the braces.

Some games would be easier to keep going than others but it's better for the community to decide that rather than just the whim of the corporate.

Problem is the community in most cases arent fronting the most money into servers to begin with so they have no say in servers staying up.

The vast majority of these games would lose most of their players and servers wouldn't cost much to host the ones who remain. There would also be people that would just run a server for themselves. The goal here isn't to keep the game in a populated state, but just to keep it playable.

There's also some that absolutely don't need to be online at all, like DarkSpore or SimCity

If a game is online only, it should be legally mandatory to publicly release the server source code upon end of services.
It would be interesting if a law was passed that all online only games would become able for people to run their own servers, when the official ones get shut down. Like if an mmo dies, anyone who has the ability, can then open a fan server

How about just... dont buy those games. they're only going to improve when the numbers show what they're currently doing isnt working

This is giving "U.S. parties will start picking better candidates if people just stop voting/vote 3rd party in elections" energy.

I'm sure Blizzard has had tons of pushback from disgruntled fans, yet I haven't seen the thread of their business turning everything around that had their base demographic so mad all these years. If loss of sales with direct discontent isn't enough to change a developer, I highly doubt loss of sales without the discontent would.

This is good. It should also go for tv too.

there was this one arkanoid clone on DSI that i really wanted to play. It had over thousands of levels, had a space theme, lots of cool stuff. It got shut down and i was never able to buy it. Dont know what it is called or if it even exists anymore.

then there are games like Guardian Legend, which have never rereleased and nobody really knows whether Broderbund or Compile own it.

Anyone who entertains the idea of "racism against whites" without understanding what racism actually is or entails is platforming, or at least enabling white supremacist thought. Because it's just a dog whistle at that level.

He's got some other gems of problems, too.

The issue would resolve itself if people stop buying Ubisoft shit, even if the game isn't a "game as a service".

However people continue to spend their money on it so Ubisoft is still going to keep Ubisofting. As a consumer I just ignore every game like it and if it's the fate of all video games to be like this then well I guess it's time to find a new hobby.

Asmongold just will find content he is interested and talks to his Twitch Audience about about it (reaction/discussion videos). He always says exactly what he thinks and doesnt soften the blows. This rubs some people the wrong way but hes usually always right.

He was just critical about Sweet Baby Inc but also very realist about it. Like when you think hes going all in on one side he reels it back. For example in his video titled "This got everyone mad", he points out to everyone how some twitter post by someone in the game industry "wasnt that big of a deal" and everyone was overreacting.

But it general something that sums him up well is "one week im an sjw and the next im far right /s".

This is generally true

Devs for the most part know these practices suck and hate them.

None of them want to work for years, endure ridiculous crunch only to release an unfinished product with obvious devious predatory practices.
