I can see the argument for it, tbh.
She's definitely lapsed in visibility now, which is why personally I probably would give it to Mario, but it really is impossible to overstate just how phenomenally omnipresent she was in the late 90s/early 2000s. All the brand endorsements, the way that the current "real life" Lara like Nell McAndrew or Lucy Clarkson was guaranteed to become a household name during their stint with practically daily appearances in the tabloids and on TV, the way she graced the covers of so many non-gaming magazines. Lara deserves as much - if not more - credit as the PlayStation marketing (or maybe it's true to say that the effect was symbiotic) for the way that the late 90s saw gaming move out of the kids' bedrooms and into the living room in terms of public perception. Im an old school gamer, so to me Mario is more iconic. I would second what TomClark said in that she helped the Playstation blow up. Plus, the character was one of the first to have a real person used as the model.

Halo and GoW wishes they could have a billion dollar blockbuster, hit amusement park, and a game that sold 60 million units on one platformer alone (Mario Kart 8) not to mention all of the other 10/20 million+ Mario titles on the Switch. Mario's outreach is definitely beyond video-games, which none of them really have at the moment. Mario Luigi Peach Bowser Sonic Donkey Kong Pac-Man Link Zelda Yoshi Pikachu Characters that would be more along her level are: Master Chief Kratos Solid Snake Sub Zero Scorpion Maaaaaybe Cloud from FF7? Just my opinion.
