Saw this stupid af tweet earlier and now I see it here. To call SpongeBob ugly is stupid and the tweet comes from a person who just thinks their opinions are facts to what is ugly.

I just kinda hate the We Bare Bears/Clarence/Prince Ivandoe artstyle that is less detailed but obnoxiously expressive, but has butternut squash heads and perfectly circular eyes with black dots in the middle and the half circle teeth. Somebody shift the paradigm away from this shit, it makes me miss stuff like Camp Lazlo and Chowder a lot more.

Western style literally depends on the genre.

Comedy shows tend to make the characters look more cartoony, to multiply the effect. More serious shows, such as superhero shows, tend to be more realistic.

If it's considered ugly, I'm thankful for that as Western animations has more uniqueness to them in their designs. I'll take Simpsons, Doug, or Rugrats designs over everything looking like an anime.

It used to not be like this but it feels like the ugly style has been a trend of the mid 2000s - mid 2010s. I don't know why though

There is a ton of weird and ugly anime.

Even One Piece, the most popular current anime, is pretty gross and off-putting.

Then there is a ton of kids anime which looks cheap, weird, or gross. America never gets these.

Then there is really weird stuff for adults.

Weebs tend to only watch the pretty shounen stuff.

The Oblivion character creator is incredible. You have a billionty trillion settings and yet the faces are always identical and unspeakably hideous.

Seems that people are counting everything that is stylized as ugly. Reminds me of the art critics who don't count abstract art as "real art" or the ones whining about post modernism. Basically because they don't like it it's ugly and their opinions are fact.

Not everything has to look realistic to be good. Shows can often have impressive animation, or backgrounds or creative designs with out having pretty human characters all the time.

What is or isn't ugly is subjective. Except for Big mouth of course.

100% Hand drawn to everything done on a touch screen/pc. Much cheaper, and quicker. Which is the reason why it looks like flash animation. Some people prefer the latter as well, especially the kids of today. Our time is done. Just memories.

Because brain rot has set in and "good looking art" has been replaced with "I want to have sex with it." Hence why even in Japanese stuffs stuff like Ping Pong the Animation had the usual suspects whining about how ugly it was while on the flip side it was lauded for its amazing art direction and animation.

It's all about "peepee not hard" whining.

I mean, SpongeBob is cute enough to be moderately popular in Japan where cuteness rules the roost, despite Nickelodeon as a whole failing to catch on, and there being even more of a bias against "ugly" western cartoons and games over there.

PJs living the projects.

freaky ass art style made me uncomfortable as a kid.

Ugly? No.

Deliberately different or unique? Maybe.

It can contribute to the feel of the show, instead of all being samey or real.

Superjail is premium art compared to some shows out there.

See: 12oz Mouse, Lazor Wulf, The Life And Times Of Tim, Ten Year Old Tom, Kevin Spencer.

(All except the first of which were still great shows.)

I wish more western cartoons looked like the stuff in OP (minus Rick and Morty) tbh. Nowadays so many cartoons look like a fucking Adventure Time rip off. I'm so sick of that calarts kinda style on so much stuff in the west, whether it's for adults or kids. Sure we occasionally get something like Primal, but that is the VAST minority. It does seem like we are slowly moving away from that god awful style, but it's still the most popular by far.

Anime at least is appealing to look at for the majority of shit coming out. Like Frieren, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Oshi No Ko, and Jobless Reincarnation are all visually appealing and distinctive from one another.

Why is the one guy in the background of the PJs green? Is he sick?

Im not reading all those posts, but has someone said its because it allows comedy cartoons to be more organically slapstick if theyre not locked into a sophisticated anime style?
