A lot of them honestly don't see it. And many get it but just don't care. Bad will can very easily twist truth to make "your own truth", "alternative reality", at multiple stages of cognition. It does so all the time.

Exactly, this is how we know it's not about trying to protect user data as they've legislated nothing to actually protect user data from U.S. based social media companies acquiring and selling it. China can still just buy that information from them even if TikTok is banned.

Also because younger people and progressives have been using TikTok to fundraise and coordinate political efforts, which is 100% the reason Republicans want to kill it.

I know the Republicans don't give a fuck about the American people in any meaningful way unless you're a millionaire and has many members actively pushing Putin propaganda and messaging from other despots. Oh, but they totes care about China cause of the harm they could cause America and its citizens? Yeah fucking right.

I know Republicans are lying sacks of shit about everything they do and their motivations.

I know that China can still just buy harvested user data from companies such as Meta because our legislation hasn't given us any user data protections or hold U.S.-based social media companies to any real regulations.

I know that TikTok is seen as being Dem/liberal heavy in content and that Republicans have been waging war on young people's political attempts to organize for decades.

I know that Republicans have a history of trying to quell and stamp out speech & protests that go against their narratives and that other than the Civil War and 15 years afterwards and the Civil Rights Act they're always on the wrong side of history.

It is when pointing out that they're only doing this towards TikTok because of it's Chinese ties, demonstrating it has nothing at all to do with the collecting and theft of user data.

If that was the issue they actually cared about, they'd actually be doing something about it. Instead they're just singling out TikTok in an election year cause "dur China bad! China scurrrry"

The bill not only gives cable companies and wireless providers free rein to do what they like with your browsing history, shopping habits, your location and other information gleaned from your online activity, but it would also prevent the Federal Communications Commission from ever again establishing similar consumer privacy protections.

So quite clearly they don't actually give a shit about privacy or compromising personal data to China's benefit. It's all fraud.

Divot was always a pretty far right poster on the politics board. Like, a lot of them just pretend to be liberals because they know it buys them the ability to have discussion on these boards. If they admit their true politics, they lose that.

I haven't really been on the politics board but in his defense I usually do see him mainly having left wing values otherwise. He just has an irrationally intense hatred for Chinese things and seems to be a bit pro-establishment Dem.
