I'll be honest, I cannot tell the difference. I don't fault anyone who can, but I personally just don't.

Not really. I mean I'll endure it if I absolutely have to, but it's 60fps minimum.

I'll accept it for old games. On anything made in the PS4 era onwards its beyond pathetic though

The exception is very specifically games like South Park Stick of Truth which pick that FPS on purpose to achieve a particular art style.

Anyone that can't tell the difference needs to try using a TV or monitor made in the past 2 decades

These days not really. Console gamers dealt with it from the PS1, saturn and N64's 3D games up until the PS4, xbox one, wii u.......and the switch because thats just how things were, but the PS5 and xbox series x finally gave us the option to prefer performance in the system settings. Let each person decide if they want to lower resolution, reduce npcs walking around etc. and cut off shadows for better performance. Final fantasy 7 rebirth's "fuzzy" perfomance mode is fine to me since my really good TV helps deal with the picture....I would have been annoyed forced into 30fps with that one.

Also for crying out loud stop forcing ray-tracing on us....Gotham knights, final fantasy 16 (which i believe they eventually patched it to where you can cut it off thankfully), and that plague tale game weren't no better for it.

Nope. 60 is barely acceptable. After playing games at 80-120 anything less looks kind of shit.

People who say they cant tell a diff have to be trolling right?

Boot up any game, set settings to 60+ fps and play for an hour or two, set it down to 30fps and try playing again. You dont see a difference? No fucking shot

There's a difference when you compare them 1:1 after the other, but once you get used to 30, it doesn't really make the game feel much different. 60 looks smoother, but 30 is perfectly fine.

Not trolling. Maybe if I watched a side by side comparison I could tell, but if Im playing a random game I wouldnt be able to tell you if its 30 or 60.

Yeah, if you handed me a controller and said "This one is 30" then handed me another and said "This on is 60" I could probably tell the difference. But I would never pass the FPS Pepsi Challenge.

I've put up with it for so long it doesn't really bother me too much now. But there's a big difference between that and 60+ and I much prefer the latter. However I usually bust the graphics to max and if it plays comfortably under 60 I'll roll with it.

Depends on the game, I'm not going to bitch over old games having this limitation. I'd say though, modern games need to be released with 60 as a baseline. One would think that 60+ would have become the standard by now yet here we are.

There are those who can tell the difference, those who can't, and those who claim they can but really can't.

Same goes with resolution. I worked at Best Buy in the early 2010's, and the number of dudes who came to buy TV's who just HAD to have 1080p to watch football was hilarious (because the NFL was broadcasting in 720p exclusively for years).

FPS affects the quality of a game. If the first feeling you get when you see the animation in a game is Jesus Christ this looks jank obviously its going to taint whatever enjoyment the game otherwise might have had, in the same way bad controls would. Its a constant feel of this is terrible that doesnt go away.

I understand what youre trying to say about inconsistent FPS, but no, Id rather an inconsistent 40+ fps than a consistent 30fps

Can someone answer a question for me?

my 3070 is getting up there in age way sooner than I wouldve expected (mainly due to 8gigs of VRAM not cutting it on brand new titles on high settings), so I cant just expect everything to run at 144 fps

should I just try to aim for as high as possible or should I do a multiple of 12, or 30, or whatever? Would a locked framerate at some random number like 97 feel worse to play than 72fps or 90, for example?

It's fine, and I'm someone who can easily tell the difference. It will always be around in games because choosing 30fps or 60fps is a matter of the devs making the choice to aim for those framerates, not a matter of hardware.

I do feel bad for the people in here that apparently can't play >99.99% of games ever released, though, since the only locked 60fps games on consoles I can cite off the top of my head are Super Mario 3D World and F-Zero GX.
PraetorXyn posted...
It baffles me how so many people think frame rate is a matter of sight. Its a matter of feel. Low frame rates feel choppy, like you move and theres lag between when you press buttons or move the mouse and it actually happens.
It's also a matter of sight (movement is smoother). Some games just control like shit in the mud regardless, like Soulsborne games.
