My best friend plays a lot of video games with me and we have pretty much exhausted every option that I have in split-screen co-op. I want to get a new game and have come down to these choices. The GOTY edition of Borderlands and Halo Reach are around the same price on Amazon and I have more than enough money in my Amazon account to buy them, so money isn't an issue. I am mainly looking for the best co-op experience. We have not played Borderlands, but we have played Halo Reach, just not either in co-op campaign or team matches online. I am asking for people who have played both in a co-op setting as to not give me a biased opinion.

I haven't played Reach but Halo 3 Co-Op and while it was super fun the game was still quite short so if Reach is similar length wise you'd get more bang for your bucks with Borderlands.

I have played both in co-op, but with two different people so it's tricky to compare. Reach was played over two sessions in split screen in Legendary and was mostly fun because of how inept me and my friend are at Halo games. The other was played over several sessions online, so it might be different split-screen. We were gonna play it co-op but it doesn't allow you to play 4 player local over two TVs/consoles/games which is ****ing ridiculous.
I'd say Borderlands is a much deeper experience with the levelling and amount off guns and skill customisation, whereas Reach is something you can just pick up and play whenever especially with the online.

Oh and we have played a lot of Halo 3 together. We have gone through the campaign probably 5 times or more and in my 1000 or so games that I have played on XBL, I'll say that 850 have been with him.

There's a story but not really. It's just there for the sake of being there, just so there's an end to the game and when you get there nothing happens. You just kill stuff and find random items. It's all about building your character and finding better items.

The Borderlands multiplayer experience is one of the best in gaming. However, it's an incredibly lonely single player game and not near as fun. But it sounds like you guys play often together, so this shouldn't be a problem. Try to get a team of four and watch the fireworks happen.

I wouldn't say that we play as often as we used to. Our schedules are generally incompatible during the weekdays but we hang out on the weekends and usually for about 8-12 hours, half of which is taken up by video games. I am heavily leaning towards Borderlands GOTY right now and I am probably going to make a decision sometime in the evening
