The most hated character in most television shows is a woman. Women are just harder to portray as honest and hard working and much easier to portray as shrill and vindictive. However, I have no idea who Lily is or why exactly she is hated.

And much easier to portray as annoying. Male characters are "eccentric" or "lovably oafish." Similar female characters are annoying. Women are just harder to portray in as likable a light.

Lily is the Elaine of the group.

I've watched no more than three episodes of Seinfeld, but I know without a doubt that Elaine is the most hated of the four mains (and the only female). Peggy has the same distinction in King of the Hill. If you had to pick a dozen or so main characters, she'd probably be the only female and easily the least liked. Lisa probably shares a similar distinction in The Simpsons. I have a feeling the most hated lead in Friends is one of the three females, although I've never seen that show. You can probably pull so many more examples.

I've never seen a good female stand-up tbqh. And I think it's more than that. Females are just less often portrayed with the qualities that most people find likable - honesty, dedication, humility, a sense of humor, etc. And even when they ARE, their natural... I dunno, shrillness (hell, we may as well call it "being a woman") might STILL make them less likable than their main counterparts. Hell, Skylar White is almost surely the least liked main character on Breaking Bad.

Skyler is terrible. I think they've been trying to make her more likable this season-- it certainly feels that way.

I'd say it's because at times she feels a bit more like an obstacle to Walt than a character. And while she's often in the right, her passive-aggressive way approach to dealing with situations makes me not want to side with her. When she's more directly confrontational about things, she's much more likable as a character, in my opinion.

Most writers and directors and other people in the business are men. They usually can't write good women. The tropes that most writers fall on for women tend to be more annoying than those of men.

For example, I often don't like Lily much for the same reason I don't like Carla on Scrubs, because she is the trope of "I must be in control of everybody else's lives FOR THEIR OWN GOOD". The whole maternal instinct towards adults tends to piss me off. You rarely see that with male characters.

There's plenty of other bad traps that people fall into for female characters and when it gets down to it, if you're going to do a few hundred episodes of a show, you're going to fall back on the standards at some point.

Of course, there are similar problems with "double standards" (for lack of a better word) in real life. "Positive" traits in men and women are different. Unfortunately, many of the traits that make for "likeable" female characters often do not make for good drama/comedy.

Yeah its easily Ross. i mean he and rachel are clearly bottom tier but ross edges her out because shes at least funny when hes not around.

I like Lily, ha I think the only joke of hers that I found fell flat is "where's the poop". I think I'm highly tolerant to "annoying" characters, especially females, there seems to be one in every show I don't mind. For example, no complaints about Skyler.

I'd rank 'em like so, but its tough:

Ha oh I still ranked Lily last I guess, but I am a fan.

Hell yeah this. I hate Robin. She's actually gotten less annoying lately, but she's very rarely funny, I can count on one hand how many times she's made me laugh, but not even really laughing, just a little chuckling. Lily isn't much funnier, but she's less annoying to me, honestly. Sometimes I hate her, but never as much as I hate Robin. And I actually like Lily sometimes too, I also find her a lot hotter than Robin. I like Ted as well, he's a good character, sometimes he's stupid, but overall he's fine with me. At least we can all agree that Barney and Marshall are the best.

As for other shows, in Scrubs, I used to hate both Elliot and Carla. Then I used to like old Elliot from the first few seasons more than new Elliot from the last few seasons (about when she started wearing the lab coat that is), but that has been switched, now I pretty much just hate the old Elliot, and actually like the new Elliot. Carla is annoying, and I dislike her more often than not, but she's actually a good character, and sometimes she really shines. And then other times it's just like oh god die please.

Rachel is the absolute worst character in Friends. I hate her. She has no redeeming qualities, she's always annoying, she's never funny, she's dumb, she's shallow, she's a b****, I hate her. Everyone else is way better than her, even all of the side characters.

Oh Man scrubs. The women on that show are the worst written women anywhere ever.

Really...its like watching a live action cartoon much of the time with that show(hint:wit h the exception of one arc per season after the first two this makes it great for watching randomly after the news but terrible for sitting down and watching through) but the women DEAR GOD the women.
