At that young of an age, I would guess it's just other people pointing out that they do things associated with the opposite gender and prefer to make friends with the opposite genders, since sexuality is neither realized at that age nor does it have any relevance towards gender identity.

The scout leader didn't know the policy, elevated it to a supervisor.
The supervisor said "Yeah, we have allowances for that. The kid can join."
And then the news made a circus out of the whole thing. Referring to the kid as "he" and "boy" (inaccurate if the kid is transgender) and questioning the mother's parenting.

Really, the only people who acted improperly here is the news. I think it's totally reasonable for the scout leader to say "I'm just a volunteer; I don't feel comfortable making the call; please talk to my supervisor."

What if he's not transgender, and simply is a boy that wants to be in Girl Scouts? The only time I see the word "transgender" in the article is in the Girl Scouts public statement, you'd think they would have directly described the kid that way if it were the case.

I've known plenty of butch lesbians who were happy being female.
I've come across at least a few femme lesbians (we're talking high heels, dresses, and makeup) who subsequently decided they were transmen and started taking testosterone.

For that matter, a friend of mine from San Francisco (butch lesbian gone transman) was complaining that he's the only transman he knows who watches sports.

If anything, it's way, way less connected to societal gender roles than I would have expected before actually talking to people.

How many transgendered people do you know wanted to be the other gender but still want to do the stereotypical things of their current gender? Most male to female transgendered people want to wear dresses, high heels, etc. Their sexual orientation means nothing in this case.

But it does. Being butch is the expression of the male gender role. You're right, they're not transgender--and that's the point. Wanting to have societally male things does not make them transgender.

Canada's had a law since the mid-80s that any sport needs to be either co-ed, or have a male league and a female league. So...you literally can't say "Girl parts = no".

Having grown up with that system, I thought it was great, actually.

A female friend of mine in my conservative Texas middle school played on the football team. And it was totally not a big deal at all. I mean, she played for the C team because she was a pretty small girl, but no one gave her s*** about it.

Fun fact: in Canada, the boy scouts aren't exclusive to boys. I totally have a female cousin who prefers boy scouts to girl scouts, and not due to any transgender issue or anything. She just likes camping and outdoorsy stuff, which the boy scouts do more of.

With sports it's different because "girl parts" can mean "inferior physical ability" which is something you don't want on your sports team.

For girl scouts you can't use that excuse, since all they want is someone cute to sell cookies, and this kid works for that.
