Alright, since my previous topic about Warriors Orochi 3 purged, and Board 8 probably hates seeing me make topics about "those ****ty button mashing games" twice a week, and since I currently have 3 Warriors games in my Now Playing on my Backloggery, I've decided to centralize everything in this singular spectacular topic! And to make it more interesting than my random reactions to DLC news and raging at archers in WO3, I'll also do those rankings and writeups on DW7's characters throughout the topic. You know, probably.
I dunno if anyone else here is currently playing a Koei game (Xiahou_Shake was playing WO3 recently, dunno if he's done with it), but if anything, I imagine this topic will be a lot like the fighting games topic (aka just me and two other people) without the sudden bursts of 50-100 posts all at once.
I'll also probably try to sell you on these games every so often, so be prepared for that. >_>
I'm slowly working towards the Platinum trophies on the two PS3 games, so this topic will probably be around for awhile, provided I don't let it purge again.
I guess I'll get things started by generally ranking the DW kingdoms! Wei > Jin > Shu => Wu
Wei's got some of the most badass officers, a few of which spill into Jin. Jin has the Sima family, who basically exist to laugh at how superior they are to everyone else. Shu has some great officers as well (hell yeah Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang), but I really don't like Liu Bei. And Wu doesn't really do much after the Battle of Chibi other than take opportunistic shots against Wei every now and then.
So yeah, come one, come all, and let us talk about mashing square and triangle for topics to come!

Oh, and probably the main reason most of you clicked on this topic: One Piece Pirate Warriors is coming out sometime this year!
I personally know very little about One Piece, but I've actually become such a fan of the Warriors games that I'm thinking about trying to catch up to all of the anime just so I can play this game.

I only played Yukimura's first mission in SW3, and while I like most of they things they've done with objectives and whatnot, who thought it would be a good idea to make time stop every time your weapon hits an enemy?
EDIT: Oh yeah, there's Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, too, huh? Haha. Maybe I'll check that out later, but I had a hard time enjoying DWG2 because I didn't know who any of the characters were. And there's no way I'm watching all 50 Gundam shows or whatever!

All but one of my IRL DW friends loves Wu. That last one loves Shu. But none of us have played 7 yet (I know, travesty; I'm getting it in a couple of weeks though) so no thoughts on Jin.
Shu used to be my favorite because of Ma Chao and Zhou Yu, but I find myself liking Wu more and more the more I play 7. The good-but-kinda-incompent vs. bad-but-pretty-efficient dynamic Shu and Wei have going on is cool, but Wu f***ing s*** up just because is always awesome. Plus they have Gan Ning, so yeah.

Why you should play Dynasty Warriors 7 Honestly, I rented DW7 on a whim during a free Gamefly trial. Prior to that, I had only played DW3, and that's basically all I was expecting; mindless gameplay, crappy graphics, even crappier voice acting, and some silly cutscenes. Instead, DW7 completely amazed me with doing everything pretty well--maybe even exceptionally in some cases. The graphics won't blow you away at first, but you slowly realize how impressive they are. DW7's selling point is its surprisingly well-done Story Mode; each of the four kingdoms (the fourth is Jin, which united the country at the end of the Three Kingdoms era) has its own campaign, roughly about 6-8 hours long. The voice acting is decent, and the cutscenes are incredibly well done and presented seamlessly with battles.
Here's the intro to Wu's campaign, as an example:
One of the other cool things about DW7 is that it has some great DLC on PSN (360 didn't get a lot, I think). You can buy remastered versions of old costumes from DW3-6 at $1 per game. There are other costume packs you can buy, as well, and while they're a bit pricier ($5 per kingdom), it's still a lot better than what some other companies are charging for a single alternate costume *coughsquareenixcoughnamco*. There are also DLC weapons that are unique and sometimes hilarious, like the Iron Boat:
Not all of it is out in the US yet (the boomerang and ringblade, as well as the fairytale costumes only recently came out in Japan), but Koei has been very good about supporting DW7 overseas. On the PS3, at least.
TL;DR: If you even remotely like Dynasty Warriors or have any sort of interest in the Three Kingdoms era, you need to play Dynasty Warriors 7. It's got a very well done Story Mode and some cathartically fun, if mindless, gameplay. It's got roughly 65 different characters to choose from, as well as a ton of great DLC. It's also $40 new in a lot of places!

DW7 felt kinda empty outside story mode, though. I didn't feel like it was as replayable as DW5 or Basara. It might just be a sign I'm burned out on that type of game, though.
Also the lack of DW6 Diao Chan costume DLC makes me incredibly sad ;__;

Wu has more babes than any other faction. That's reason enough. (Although it's questionable to count the Qiaos as babes the way they're presented in-game.) Still, in a very indirect sense, that is why I favor Wu. I started off back in DW2 playing SSX. The default Wei people looked mean and angry, and the default Shu people had big beards and fought with slow cludgy weapons. Wu was more my style, at least the way they presented it in the booklet. And so I came to love playing Wu. I understand storywise they may not be nearly as awesome as Wei being the fearsome beast everyone else conspires against, but they did outlive the other two kingdoms by a great deal.

I can kind of understand that. Outside of Story Mode, there's only really Conquest mode, which is kind of underwhelming. I probably would never have finished it all, if it weren't for Trophies. This is probably one of the few cases where I think trophies have legitimately extended the life of a game for me. Granted, a lot of it was a grind, but I still enjoyed it.
And what, Diao Chan totally has her DW6 costume. I personally like her 4 and 5 costumes more, though.
I played the second stage of Yukimura's story mode in SW3. This game is starting to grow on me. I'm not a fan of officers just kind of falling on the floor and being untouchable for like 5 seconds, though. It's not as ugly as I thought it would be either. Not as pretty as DW7 or WO3, of course, but all things considered, not bad for the Wii.
What's the difference between Power and Speed type weapons in this game?
And DWNext, I really want it, but I don't have money for a PSVita right now. :(

By basically being opportunistic and just a general pain in the ass! I don't think they ever actually were much of a threat after Zhuge Liang basically made them his b**** after Chibi.

Yes, but only Conquest mode. Story Mode doesn't let you do co-op. They didn't think that one through.
7XL lets you do co-op story mode (you will need to remix to get to it, meaning you still need the original game), but again, they kind of screwed up and you can only do co-op if you've beaten the story mode once before. Kind of silly.

When does 7XL come out? I have to get that. My friends and I have too much history with this series and that's a major part of it. That and Versus, honestly, and I know Koei's been phasing that outta offline play for a while now so no hopes there.
No matter how great 7 is (which I hear often and I'm excited for) if I can't do Story Mode with my friends they won't be impressed; they're all fairly burnt-out on the franchise otherwise.
Oh, speaking of which... I wanna do something nice for ya since you got me a game all those months ago. Take a look around, lemme know if anything's coming out in May. I'll pick it up for ya.

I played the series from 1-6. I got all mah frands into it when I took home 2 and blew them away. Most of them got fed-up with Koei around 6 but I wanna bring 'em back.
And yeah, DW3 was the last DW game I played. I got SW1 back when it was new, and I didn't really like it for some reason (but apparently people love it still?). I've heard 5 is great, so I went ahead and bought 5 and 5XL for the PS2, but I've yet to play them.

Well I thought SW1 was 'decent' but SW2 really did it for me overall. Still one of my favorites from the franchise. WO2 is also great. I look forward to 3 for both o' those.
I also dabble in DWG. Thus far I think I prefer 2 over 3 though, which is somewhat of a rare opinion around here because most people didn't dig the space fights. I realize they kinda sucked but they added a lot of neat atmosphere to me.

I have been wondering the same thing. And is it better than 3? I bought 3 because it was the most recent, but I guess most fans like 2 and 1 over 3.
As far as DWG...I didn't mind the space battles as much as the gigantic bosses that were complete grinds to beat. Also, the story was kind of crappy. I think I play these games more for the settings than the gameplay, which is why I still like DW7 more than WO3, even though WO3 has much, much better gameplay.

I hear you on that Weaku. And as a bonus I hear for once DW7 actually did a decent job at execution and not just the kickass setting too.
I try to explain to my friends that I'm big on Gundam but not as big on DWG since the other series have cooler settings (well, Warriors Orochi's is just ridiculous) and they laugh since the execution is always horrendous anyway, but I dunno... doesn't mean much to me somehow. It's Koei, you know?

And you probably can't possibly build it up too much for me. As it stands, having played 1-6, I really can't fathom them doing an OK job with the stuff. So I really look forward to seeing it done OK. And if it's done decently on top of that? Hell man, I'll laugh too.
Played some more SW3. I really like the Tactical Bonus things, but the overall slow pace to the action is really bothering me. Everything else is pretty cool, though.
