there are no specific qualifications to be a juror. the whole point of being a juror is that it's a jury of your peers. that's why the attorneys hire experts to present their evidence for us to learn about and understand. juries are free to ask questions about the evidence if they need clarification while they're deliberating.

and your comma splice is irritating.

You are there to declare a verdict, something judges studied and trained years for to do and you assume you can do that just like that, without that background?

judges are there to declare a verdict based on their legal knowledge.

the legal system gives you the right to a jury trial. so yes, i assume i can do it because the attorneys are there to give me the tools to do so. they hire experts to present the evidence in a way for me to understand so i can make a decision with those tools they give us because the person being tried wanted that.

of course he doesn't. he's been on this board for 100 years and somehow he is still totally ignorant to anything that goes on in america despite asking a million questions in every topic.

My work pays nothing for jury duty services. I feel that should be standard. Granted that's what sick days are for. I think I am more annoyed with people wasting time trying to weasel out of jury duty instead of just being honest.

My previous jury duty session had two people claiming they do not understand English well enough but after some questions from the judge it was determined one of them immigrated to the U.S. and graduated high school here while another got his/her hair salon license and the test was in English. The judge felt both were more than capable of understanding English and we wasted a good 15-20 minutes determining that.

Maaaybe if folks knew they weren't gonna lose pay or waste away a sick day they would be more willing of dealing with jury duty. Back in 2014 or 2015 I got called in on a Friday before a holiday weekend. The judge gave us the option to stay and finish the panel screening or return on Monday. I was annoyed that the majority wanted to leave early at noon instead of staying till 5pm and finish the panel screening.

That is really odd. Should be only every other year at most I thought. Do you keep your proof of service from each session? You should be able to get out if you prove you served the previous year.

The American legal system just simply makes no sense to me.

A verdict is an important thing, so why train and educate a proper judge, when you can just use a bunch of random people from the streets...

My work doesn't pays for jury duty. Its either get no pay for the day or use a sick/vacation day which is why I feel coverage for jury duty should be standard.

Still a bit annoyed that I got summoned 3 times in around a year's time and never even made it out of the waiting room. All 3 times my group was sent home after about an hour of waiting. Would've been nice to have been rejected after questioning at least one of those times.

The rule -- which can vary by state -- is that if you're called but don't have to physically appear (ie, you get notice but call in the night before and they don't need you), you aren't supposed to be called for the next year or so. However, if you do physically appear -- whether you serve or not -- you get a reprieve for two or three years depending on the court. ****HOWEVER**** there are TWO sets of courts, your local court and the federal court. When you get called for one, you only get reprieve from that one. You can still be called for the other so you could, in theory, serve on two juries in the same year.

The other issue is that, while your local court is probably close by, the federal courthouses can be just about anywhere in your state. Oh, other fun fact? US Marshals are total dicks.

It'd be one helluva commute for you, considering we're on different sides of the country. Granted, if they did, they'd have to comp travel for you. There's a story of a guy from one state who temporarily was living in Alaska (but still had residency in the other state) who they made appear and the judge was going to make him sit on the trial until they figured out the full cost.

For civil maybe, but you'd still be considered for criminal. The only people who get an automatic out are lawyers. However, there are certain people ineligible to serve including ex-cons, current cons, government officials, law enforcement agents, etc.

One of the weirdest mix up with a case and an illegible juror was the Scoutmaster at my Boy Scouts troop. He works as a manager of sort for the Los Angeles court IT department. He had helped a city prosecutor upload some photos of a crime to his laptop for the case.

By coincidence he, the Scoutmaster, was selected for that case and when the prosecutor showed a little bit of the photos to the jurors the Scoutmaster had to speak up and say that he has already seen all those photos and kinda know too much already. Immediately he was dismissed.

I just thought it was funny that the system did not automatically exclude certain city workers.
