The whole seamless indoor-outdoor thing is what makes it great. It's a perfect balance of two different types of gameplay.

Battlefield is much bigger on the vehicle thing and its infantry/indoor stuff suffers as a result.

Assault on the Control Room was the GOAT Halo 1level.

The Covenant was the GOAT Halo 3 level.

Checks out.

The Mako was much worse though the Warthog is pretty unwieldy. Anyways, I never used the Warthog if I could help it. Definitely avoided the Mongoose.

Better, but still not the best. And it certainly wasn't as fun as any of the other rides. Ghosts. Banshees. SCORPIONS. All the new vehicles in the later Halos. Superfun.

Most people disagree and think the Warthog was definitely the most fun.

I'm thinking you had trouble with the driving controls (left stick gas, right stick look to steer).

No they wouldn't... what's the fun in a vehicle when you're only the driver and can't shoot anything? Especially in campaign.

And I know the controls, they just weren't anywhere mear as fun as any other vehicle and it wasn't as intuitive as other vehicles in the game.

That could be said for Halo 1 in general since you traverse half of the same maps with variations. And some maps require you revisiting within the same level. I know a lot of people liked The Silent Cartographer but, for me, Assault was easily more fun since I got to use all those vehicles and weapons. Same with Two Betrayals for the same reason. After that, probably Truth and Reconciliation since the sniping was so fun.

Getting a Ghost stuck in the bottom of an elevator shaft during Assault on the Control Room and getting in an endless fight over it with my cousin was my most memorable Halo 1 experience.

But Silent Cartographer is still the definite Halo mission for me.

The most memoriable part of CE for me was in Assault on the Control Room(I think). There was a part called "If Only I had a Super weapon (or something like that), you could grab the invisibility thingy from the previous corridor, and steal the banshee on the bridge from under the elite standing near it.
Also in Halo 3, the area where you have to take down 2 of those spider mech things. It's possible to get into a Pelican(I think that's what they are called) land it on top of the first mech shoot it's weak spot, get back on the Pelican and fly to the second mech and repeat.

Racing to beat the Elite to the Banshee was intense.

And that's The Covenant. Easily the best Halo level ever. Two Scarabs, using a Scorpion and a Hornet, teaming up with The Flood and the immediate betrayal afterwards. So cool.

They were balanced with plenty of anti-vehicle weapons. The vehicles were placed like power weapons and were meant to be used. They weren't cheap at all.

Boy, you just have to be contrarian to every comment in here, eh? Sure there were plenty of power weapons, but there weree also plenty of people playing so id someone else was hogging them and you were up against a vehicle, you were out of luck. Either way, I hated using them over being on foot. I did particularly love killing people who just spent their matches in vehicles making themselves easy targets when you have a good weapon or if they suck at driving... which is true for most of the people who stuck to vehicles.

Yeah vehicles have been balanced well for most of the series until Halo 5. In Halo 5 vehicles are a little less powerful than they should be due to a variety of reasons. You've got the absurdly powerful BR, all the movement options Halo 5 offers for traveling on foot, and vehicle weapons just being plain weaker. The Warthog got hit the hardest by all of this

Halo's always been at its best with large campaign and multiplayer levels though, I agree. I haven't really cared for any small non-vehicle arena style maps since Halo 2, where I loved Lockout and Ascension. Funny thing is I don't actually use vehicles often, I just like their presence. And that's why I primarily play BTB. Too bad MCC's BTB is ruined, and Halo 5's was an afterthought.

Yet another reason The Covenant is the GOAT Halo level. That piano theme kicking in as Truth tries to hold the Control Room with everything he has left and a pair of Scarabs drop in to stop you in the middle of a melee between the joint UNSC-Sangheili and Covenant vehicles/aircraft for control of the light bridge.
