My dog is really nervous from the fireworks and she's throwing up and doing diarrhea. She also just pooped a small pool of blood. Is this due to nerves? She had a stomach virus a week and a half ago but there wasn't any blood in that one.

That isn't something that would be caused by nerves; its possible that the nervousness set something else off, but blood would not be from nerves alone. Either way, its something to look into. Never a good thing.

Stressful events can cause this from what I understand, but I don't know how immediate that would be.

I'd say keep an eye on your dog over the next couple of days, and if it continues go see a vet because it could be any number of things from parasites to diseases.

In the meantime just make sure she's comfortable.

My dog can do the same thing. He sometimes can have diarrhea and have it be bloody due to stress and anxiety.

However if you are concerned definitely get your dog to a 24 hr emergency vet or call your vet in the morning if it continues

So far I'm not concerned but the fact that she just pooped straight blood twice makes me a little worried. It wasn't mixed with anything. I think it's just stress but i don't know :(

Whenever my dog gets nervous she shits and pees on the floor.

It doesnt happen too often but only when crazy stuff happens she doesnt understand. She never pooped blood though.

Dogs definitely do relieve themselves from nerves but never blood

With so many possible causes, ranging from the benign to the deadly, the best thing to do is to take your dog to the veterinarian. After performing a complete examination, your veterinarian will probably want a stool sample.

Check on her in the morning, and if it continues definitely take her to the vet. It can be anything (worms, a virus, bacterial infection). Stress is a possibility, but you should get her checked if it continues.

collect the stool samples and bring to vet

obv the nervousness is just 'fireworks often freak out dogs' (mine give zero fucks about fireworks though, just like me)

emergency vet may or may not be necessary depending on other behavioral patterns, if youre not worried she's going to die right now you can wait

Thank you. Are you a vet?

I can't really afford to bring her to a vet unless im sure it's necessary :( the blood worries me. Can you speak to that? It was two little pools of blood that she pooped of last night. No more blood since then but she threw up this morning. Could stress have caused all this?

it is necessary. it just may not be '24 hour emergency vet' urgent.

i am not a vet. stress does not cause blood in fecal matter

generally speaking vets will advise all dog owners to bring their dogs in if their stool is full of black tar, which indicates blood in it from the intestines.

this is less serious as it sounds like fresh blood, and is more likely a result of a minor injury, but with the other symptoms is a cause for concern. if nothing is wrong it will cost you $30-$40. well worth it to ensure your pet's safety. treatment would likely not be much more expensive, probably broad spectrum antibiotics.

bring the stool

they will probably not need to xray her since she is able to relieve her bowels. xray would be for a blockage. they may elect to test the stool

last time i had my dog xrayed it was because he was in extreme pain and couldn't relieve himself. he had bloat symptoms and it was because he was repeatedly underfed, then overfed, at a boarding facility

a dog that is experiencing that level of water loss needs subcutaneous fluids to avoid death by dehydration, so it's understandable

I mean, a veterinary is your only choice here and it really saddens me that a pet owner's priority when his/her pet is clearly sick is asking random people on an online video game forum instead of going to the veterinary...

Same deal, if you can't afford veterinary why even own a pet, pets are expensive and aren't just "toys"

OK. I did bring the stool last week and everything came back fine. They were insisting on an xray, do you think that was just them trying to get money from me?

Ok thank you. Maybe I should find another vet because I didn't really like these guys. They tried to hold my dog down for the xray and she was screaming and I've never heard that before

This is going to be harsh, but you don't need to have any pets if you cannot afford their care and treatment if they get ill.

I hope that you took your dog to the vet this morning.

I'm going to take her soon. Again fuck off. I took her a week ago and they bled me out of 300 bucks to tell me nothing is wrong. I can't afford another 500 if they want to sedate her and give her an xray to again tell me jotting is wrong. I need some indication that I'm not overreacting. I'm gonna take her today.

You guys are honestly assholes if you can't conceive of a pet owner being in a tough financial situation one year and being reluctant to let a vet squeeze money out of you at the first sign of potential trouble

fwiw, pets vomiting from stress definitely does happen.

when it's a concern is when they are vomiting repeatedly and also experiencing diarrhea, which means they are rapidly becoming dehydrated. likely faster than they can rehydrate--this is when they need to get fluids from the vet.

Lol ok and how much money does your family have?

I'm not doing well financially this month. I spent 300 dollars at the vet and nothing was wrong last week. So sorry if I'm reluctant, given those two facts, to spend more money for the vet to tell me it was just nerves.

What's your recommendation? Think I should give up my dog of 7 years who loves her home because one month I'm in a shitty financial spot?

I made an appointment with a vet. You honestly sound like a privileged asshole.

Does your dog eat dirt? Could be a parasitical thing. Hookworms cause blood. If everything else seems fine with the dog, i.e. eating/drinking, no vomiting you could try a bland diet of rice and boiled hamburger for a bit. See if that resets the gi tract.

But if you made an appt already, still a good idea to go. Up to you. I'm a vet tech fwiw.

sounds like a problem that someone's dog in the office had when they ate some pits from a fruit that had small amounts of cyanide in them. I think they were peaches or plums. Your dog eat anything strange lately?

btw emergency vets are usually way more expensive then a regular vet, which is already really expensive as you know. so unless you think your dog is actually in immediate danger try and avoid that.

I don't think it's an extreme emergency. It could be stress, sometimes they'll just have blood in their stool if they have diarrhea cause she might be inflamed and irritated inside. You definitely want the diarrhea to stop so try giving her a bland diet like unseasoned boiled rice and chicken. I believe canned pumpkin can also help.

Just keep an eye on her, keep her hydrated and comfortable.

hope you dog will be okay!
