Choose my choice

I went to the grocery store and at the checkout they mentioned their customer surveys which can get me extra points to save money on gas. The lady at the checkout and the grocery bagger girl were both nice and pleasant, but the girl put my fresh produce in the same bag as the raw meat I bought which seems stupid to me.

Part of me wants to mention it in the survey since I do remember her name, but also I know that job doesn't pay well and is typically done by people that are just starting out in the job market. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time after all. But I could also imagine someone getting sick from this kind of thing, when I bag groceries myself I never put ready to eat food with food that needs to be cooked. Maybe other people don't worry about it.

What would you do in a similar situation?

tl;dr The bag girl put my fruit in the same bag as raw hamburger, should I rat her out

I'd give a good review, because it's stupid that you have to lie just so employees don't get in trouble.

Do it. Bad employees won't get better unless someone calls them out on their mistakes.

You don't have to call her a terrible employee or shame her in your review. Just point out the mistake.

Reviews are supposed to be honest and not held back due to pity. This helps reviews be more informative. If you ever read Amazon reviews for example a lot of them are on the service they received and not the actual product. This helps nobody.

in my experience with the exception of obvious things like items that can be crushed or broken they tend to bag things as they ring them up, they can't possibly know everyone's preferences on how they want items bagged as people do differ. so to help matters in the future if you don't want two items bagged together don't put them together on the counter. or if it can't be helped tell them you want it bagged separately.

you must also keep in mind that in a lot of places they are judged and graded by their bosses on how fast they ring customers up, so with that said mistakes are bound to happen.

I should be able to say "no, I don't plan on telling all my family and friends to shop here, I'm not a fucking TV ad" without getting an employee in trouble over it. There are always a few decent questions, ones that can raise a legitimate red flag, and a whole lotta' bad meaningless ones that are treated almost the same way.

in some cases, if they bag it in another bag with other items it's fine.
my preferred method is having the meat in separate bags from the others.

biggest complaint about checker's right now is they go so damn slow (there's a few that go a reasonable speed) but hard to come by.

I understand your concern that it could've been a health issue. But luckily, nothing happened.

Let's try to move on from that. I do understand that she goofed up; everyone does every once in a while. She needs to be told this. Perhaps you may give her a tip or two if you shop there again. But giving her a poor review can jeopardise her career.

:(((

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Maybe you can give her a neutral review and add the little tidbit in the way of a suggestion...?

Just my opinion though.

Maybe she was a new bagger and just figured meat was cold and veg was cold so put them together. Not a big deal. It's funny though she didn't put the meat in a separate bag and put that bag into the bag with the veggies.

edit: I probably would have mentioned it to her when she was doing it.

Basically the best course is to give a fair review but to give the issue a mention as I'm sure from your post it was an overall positive trip except for the way things were bagged. I'm certain that the review has a "notes" or an "anything we can do better next time" section that you can mention it in.

It does need to be brought up so it can be corrected and the bagger likely won't lose their job (unless they have been corrected on the same issue repeatedly).

The managers most likely read every review, but giving them a bad review will give them incentive to fix it for next time. Giving them a good view in spite of it will think you don't actually mind. If possible a medium review would be best because it shows they could have got a good review and they might next time if they fix their service.

That's fine.

But think of it as a way of improving their customer service. Businesses survive and thrive because of superior customer service and repeat customers etc etc.

Different people react differently to different things. In the future, if this girl makes the same mistakes again and again, another customer might react worse. It's good to help whenever possible. And it won't take too much effort or time anyway.

actually I rarely see them nowdays, hell you are lucky if there are enough cashiers to man all the registers. but they are usually expected to ring up and bag your shit.

now on military bases (last I went anyways) they do have dedicated baggers but they don't get paid they survive solely off of tips but you are expected to tip them. but they don't just bag your stuff they help you put it in your car too.

I agree with this. Most cashiers offer to help bag stuff if you want over here in the UK but most the time it's not required as I'm capable of doing it myself. I actually hate when people bag my stuff without me asking for their assistance. This normally happens when school kids are on work experience though so I let them do what they must.

Depends on the store, but most have plastic baggies you can put around your meat products so they don't leak on everything else. It's up to the customer to use them though.

If it's hamburger meat in a sealed container though, and your fruit is in bags as well (I always put my fruit in bags), then there really is no chance of cross contamination.

I'd be more worried if she put the meat (heavy) on top of the fruit (easily bruised), not so much if they are in the same bag though.

Certainly wouldn't complain about it, unless you specifically asked to have them in a different bag and she ignored you or something. I'm quite sure they are not trained to put meat/fruit in different bags (actually doubt they get much training at all).

No reason to ruin someones day with a bad review though, if it really bothers you, go to the customer service center and talk to a manager about changing their policy (or ensuring that their baggers know the policy if that already is the case). That will let you fix the problem without singling anyone out.

That is what I would do probably (and have done for other things in the past). Bagging is a hard enough/thankless job as it is, no reason to make it worse for someone.
