Because I thought the point of the games was that the main character went into Silent Hill because they had some kind of terrible backstory you learn about as the game goes on and its a manifestation of that backstory.

Rose doesn't seem like she did anything wrong. Except for the fact that Sharon is apparently the only good left of Alessa.

I'm only casually interested in Silent Hill and haven't actually seen the movie, but to the best of my knowledge, Silent Hill 2 is the only entry that really takes the "terrible backstory" mantra to heart.

Silent Hill 2 is one of the greatest games ever made. 1 and 3 are good, but 2 is by far the best imo.

Silent Hill 1 is a manifestation of Alessa's personality rather than Harry's/Sharon's. I haven't played SH1, but I know the broad strokes of the plot and I think they sooooort of match with the movie. Big differences being:

There isn't a Christian cult, it's instead a religious organization called The Order. They worship a rather mysterious goddess that they believe depleted her power when she set the world to order. The Order seeks to rebirth her.

Christabella doesn't exist. Dahlia herself is the villainous leader of the cult.

Alessa has supernatural powers to begin with, so her classmates calling her a witch is a little more accurate. Because of her powers, Dahlia comes to believe that Alessa is capable of rebirthing their god. The ritual to impregnate Alessa requires her to be burned alive. The ritual is actually a success and she becomes pregnant, but her splitting herself into Alessa and Cheryl means the god can't actually be birthed.

The climax of the game involves Alessa actually birthing God and Harry aborting it. Alessa rejoins with Cheryl, but the child is a newborn baby than a full-grown kid and she has no memory of anything that happened.

When I watched it, I thought it was alright. My standards for video game movies was very low, and this left me a little pleasantly surprised.

The main gripes I remember having were that they changed the parent looking for their daughter to be the mother in a move of basically going "SH1's story wasn't generic enough" and the inclusion of Pyramid Head who inadvertently became the mascot for the series, much to the detractment of its original existence, and I mostly suspect it only became the mascot because it was one of the only things in SH2 that actually felt like it kept the same vibe as SH1 had.

SH2 had a different atmosphere to it that was less like...hellish. But Pyramid Head seemed like something right out of SH1. Then by SH3, it was back to SH1's tone. Then SH4 was like "Check out this cool concept I have!! *runs to you, trips and falls on face* oops, I'm kinda dumb sorry. n_n;"

Movie really made me sad. But at least jon snow and ned stark are in it

I saw it in theaters without having played the games and it was one of the few horrors that kept me thinking for a while afterwards. I think it was pretty good and probably the best video game adapted movie.

The second one with Jon Snow was just a cluster fuck.

basic story of Silent Hill is an adoptive daughter of a couple keep getting nightmares and saying something about Silent Hill, so one of the parents decides to go to that resort town to solve the problem.
now imagine if it was the mom who drives Alyssa to the Silent Hill town instead the dad, then you got Silent Hill movie.

People who played the games seemed to like it up until the end of the school section. This is where the movie really starts to differ from the game. After that, they hated it, especially the last 15 minutes or so.

People who never played them really didn't like it.

I thought the first Silent Hill movie, disregarding story, was shot very beautifully. A lot of the shot composition, setting, scenery and atmosphere was really great.

The second movie is in the top 3 worst movies ever made.

Huh. I see. I kinda like the approach that the movie took tho. It isnt so outright as good mc vs evil cult/god. Having the two evils go against each other is p cool.

The movie did this thing where The demons of Silent Hill were actually punishment for the evil acts of the made-up-for-movie Christian cult. However, I think it works out better for the movie as it's more relateable for the public audience. Bad adaptation of the game, but a decent enough horror movie.

SH1 was such a good movie, people who are fans of horror films in general who have never heard of the games should still watch it.

I quite enjoyed it. Good use of environmental horror, dread, gore, etc. I even appreciated the sideplot with Harry because it makes the ending even more bittersweet.
