Gurren Lagaan is basically just a straight up better Evangelion without being a total Evangelion copy. It wastes a lot less time and has a far greater sense of scale that boggles the mind. But I think Gurren Lagaan did something more meaningful and fun with the mechs being to building blocks of the world genre that Evangelion popularized. Plus, I think the mechs of Gurren Lagaan feels more like an extension of the person piloting it, while in Evangelion, they're at most plot devices and metaphors with very little textile feedback.
