these people are madmen

they assign like 300pgs of reading you need to do in 4 days and then do these looooong discussion posts and other assignments

and then compound that by having more than one class, a full time job and relationships to maintain

there's only so much time in the day >_>

It's like they forgot how tough grad school was for them and are making us write for the sake of writing or just enjoy grading papers. Some teachers are ridiculous

I have to read 4 books, post five 800 minimum word posts and write 5 papers that are 10 pages minimum each, as well as two big tests just for 1 class that ends in October. It's not even my most important class!

For that class (and what I need to graduate), I need to devise a policy or program that's feasible for any department in the criminal justice field. Minimum of 20 pages. There's 10 different tests I have to score no less than an 80 on or else I'm tossed out and have to start the class over. I also have to submit 6 papers on my topic throughout the process from now until December.

No pressure

That's what I told the head of the program. Other students have complained as well because it's insane. Was basically told "Good luck! You can do it!" in a professional manner

Probably depends what you're going for! I have a friend who went, and she said it was way easier than undergrad. The assignments were usually not overwhelming (because it was understood everyone, including the professor sometimes, worked a full-time job). The classes were always at 6PM. My friend occasionally put off assignments and professors were still chill about it, telling her to turn it in later. That would make me monkaS, but she's super personable and gets along with people easy. That might have something to do with it being easier too.

And I've known people who had stupidly long ass assignments for (what seems to me) no reason. They'd tell me, "Well, it's grad school," which is awful logic and reasoning, imo.

It's not like it's a fundamental law of the universe. It's a system people created. It can be as arbitrarily hard or easy as people want! They made it! I don't like when people make things harder than they need to be.

That's just it: some teachers are seemingly nuts when it comes to assignments. One class I took over the summer had 3 tests (50 multiple choice short answer) and 2 papers. The papers were to be no more than 8 pages. Very reasonable.

My teacher actually said "I didn't get my PhD to spend all my time grading papers."

I had the same teacher twice and with one class, he was super easy and the next hammered the shit out of us with writing assignments. It was as if he was a totally different person

I am so glad I work in a field where Bachelors is pretty much the highest education you need unless you want to get a job as a professor (and even then you can become an Adjunct with enough professional experience). I don't think I would have survived a Master's program, I was climbing up the walls to enter the workforce after my first co-op block.

what determines whether you TA or not? seems like a huge burden to either have or not have? is it just for planning to be a prof down the line, rather than going for a masters for career reasons?

I'm not sure? It's not required in my program. Maybe it's just based on the desire to want to? I would assume people who TA would like to stay in academia but that is just my thought.

I wanted to go back to school to get the easiest four-year degree possible. I found one that was doable in three years time, but that was if I went to school only. I have no idea where money would come from to eat, or pay for rent. This is when I made the decision that Id rather have universal schooling than universal healthcare. This way would be much better for society.
