It's free... there's nothing to do but explore...

and I think it might be the best in this category of games about exploring and nothing else.

This is my signature, there are many others like it, but this one is mine.
If you take 110% of what I say seriously then you're gonna have a bad time.

Yup. You can also drive a buggy or ride a horse.

There's a few hundred hidden collectables, too. Several vistas to tag, and so on and so forth.

I know Ross from Accursed Farms really really likes exploring environments for the sake of exploring them, which I can respect, but for me I think I need to find something of value or else there's no point.

Ideally, the player should be made by the game to want things. And then the point of exploration becomes, hopefully, to find things that the player wants to find.

A lot of games fail to realize how important it is to make the player want things. There can be whole parts of the game that are just pushed off into the UI and ignored or else either completely banned from the player, or given freely to the player, when really the player should only be able to get the thing in small doses by doing something like exploring.

If I wanted to just "explore" and not get anything out of it, I could just go walk outside. The whole point of a video game is to make you feel rewarded for it.

Pass.

Exploring is cool but I don't think I would like only exploring. I like having a goal/story to go along with a cool world to explore, like Skyrim.

Not really. I tend to fall in the Achiever quadrant of the Bartle Scale - I like DOING things in games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartle_taxonomy_of_player_types

Exploration is really just a means to an end (I'm going places to find things there, or fill in a map - especially if there are icons on the map that need to be triggered). I kind of need tangible evidence of progress to really enjoy a game. I don't even really use photo mode or screen caps in games because I'm more focused on what I'm doing as opposed to looking at the scenery.

Walden is sort of like that, but there are objectives to do in order to advance the narrative so I guess it's not pure exploration.

I'm somewhere between Explorer and Achiever, but closer to Explorer. I love just moving around discovering places, finding glitches, and just taking in the atmosphere.

The Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology
You are 60% Achiever
What Bartle says:

Achievers regard points-gathering and rising in levels as their main goal, and all is ultimately subserviant to this. Exploration is necessary only to find new sources of treasure, or improved ways of wringing points from it. Socialising is a relaxing method of discovering what other players know about the business of accumulating points, that their knowledge can be applied to the task of gaining riches. Killing is only necessary to eliminate rivals or people who get in the way, or to gain vast amounts of points (if points are awarded for killing other players).
You are also:

53% Explorer
53% Killer
33% Socialiser

At least until you've finished exploring your immediate surroundings. Then you'll have to travel to find a new environment to explore, at which point buying an aimless exploration game may actually be more cost-effective.

Nah. I would at least need some aspect of the game that requires me to collect items and blueprints to create items that are needed to reach new areas. Or puzzles to solve. That sort of stuff.
