From what I know of him, which is a reasonable amount, he was a right-wing nut.

Since I'm a lefty, to me of course he's a s*** tier president, war monger, and proven racist. Explains why, on the other hand, right wingers think he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Okay president but his economic vision didn't really take into account the nature of what business is actually like.

But he wasn't all bad and I think he was a good person (probably better than a lot of conservatives now who think they carry his torch). Like I sure as shit would expect he wouldn't be completely asinine about people crossing the border if it were a problem in his day.

Bad dude with bad economic and social policies.

Also responsible for the GOP and the religious right's close relationship

You can draw a straight line from Reagan to Trump

Pretty much.
Decoupling the concept of "free markets" from "but not that market!" is still something the right can't bring itself to do.

id say okay

he fucked up massively on many fronts and is responsible for the homeless crisis in CA to this day.

he did help defeat communist russia with his rhetoric and tear down the berlin wall so that was good.

mixed bag, really.

Shutting down all the mental wards began in the 50s. Reagan's governorship only followed a trend that was already happening.
It was really one of the notable bi-partisan "successes" of the 1900s anyway - the left insisted nuthouses were cruel and inhumane, and the right didn't want to pay for them anyway.

reagan was like goldwater but without integrity

that said, he basically let the neocon presence rise in the gop (eventually taking over a decade after he left office), drastically expanded the size and scope of the us govt and its budget, walking over civil liberties in the process, and gave california to the democrats as a parting gift

a mediocre president lionized and mythologized by republican media

he was def a comedian though

What about the Clinton Crime Bill?

What about it? Clinton's crime bill's worst case scenario is that it caused mass incarceration and decimated specific communities. Reagan's tax code changes lit the fire that'll burn Rome.

There's an argument out there that the Clinton Crime Bill annihilated black communities and led to more minority incarceration. I don't really believe either, which is why I said "worst case scenario."

In the end, every "tough on crime" initiative ever just led to rampant black incarceration, except the ones that led to rampant irish incarceration.

Eh... yeah, sort of? It was already happening, the bill didn't lead to anything, it just amplified the extant problem.

Ok, I'm not gonna look up specific individuals or organizations, but there were two groups that didn't like the crime bill: conservatives and black community leaders. Conservatives just because it was Clinton's bill--- they would have loved it if Reagan passed it, and community leaders because they felt that Clinton had either misunderstood or misrepresented their concerns.
