I was on the support thing with an MS support person, and she downloaded the update for Windows 10 as an iso file. The thing is, it was going to take 50 mins, so she told me to call support again when it finishes and give them the support ticket number.

Well, if I can just do it myself, why not just do it like that?

you can put it on a storage device and then boot from it. if you have a large enough USB thumb drive or something that should work

What if I don't? Is there a way to do it just with the PC like that?

generally speaking no. an iso is a disc image file, it's basically what you'd have on an installation disc to boot from. but pretty much any kind of storage media will work as long as it's formatted right. plenty of tutorials online for it

WTF, why would the MS support person download that shit without even checking if I have a thumbdrive or something like that?

i'm not sure about that, but doesn't windows 10 have some sort of installation thing you can download if you have a key? i seem to remember using that when i fixed my brother's computer

edit: ah, seems like it's what you use to make the boot media: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

I have no idea if it's still support or if it'll work for this, but in the past I've used Daemontools to mount .iso files onto a virtual disc drive to allow them to be read. Maybe look into that?

That, or go poking around in the update menu to see if there's a manual update installation option, since I would imagine that will have some form of native .iso support.

I was just going by what the support person was doing. I think she couldn't find out what's wrong and just wanted to do a fresh install of Windows. She didn't ask me any of that, and I'm not even sure I know where my Windows key is. God, she was fucking useless.

BTW, I updated my Windows via the update tool and it didn't fix my situation. I don't think it's worth doing a reinstall of Windows to fix my situation though.

normally you would burn the .iso to a CD/DVD and then you have an install disc almost as if you bought it from the store

https://www.imgburn.com/

what are you trying to update though?

if you're upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for free you can use the link on this page:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

(it's the second one under "Create Windows 10 installation media" the "Download tool now" button)

EDIT: it sounds like your problem is unrelated to this; what's your actual problem?

My Microsoft store refuses to download anything, and I can't even install the Gamepass for PC app to get my PC Gamepass games through there.

I really want to play Hotline Miami and Gears Tactics, but I can't. (Unless I pay for it again on Steam)

I usually don't pirate games, but I'm considering pirating those games, since I'm supposed to be able to play them anyways.

so you're on some version of Windows 10, but you need a newer version?

is there an error message on the Check for Updates window?

(search in start menu for "update" or go Start -> Settings -> Update and Security)

I updated it and it's still giving me problems. I'm pretty sure the CS lady was just trying to get me to do a fresh windows install because she couldn't figure out the problem.

what exactly happens when you try to download an app?

random things to try (if you haven't already) include :

  • log out and back into the store
  • run the windows store troubleshooter (Settings -> Update and Security -> Troubleshoot -> Windows Store Apps (at the bottom))
  • run wsreset from an admin command prompt and reboot

Either nothing happens, or the windows store freezes(sometimes briefly, other times for a long time). I tried the other stuff before, but not the troubleshooter. Just ran it, and it told me restart my PC. I'm hoping this will have fixed it, or I'm just going to have to start pirating the games on the PC Gamepass that I want to play.

International Standards Organization. It's like saying ANSI or ECMA or IEEE. in this case, disc images are based on the ISO 9660 standard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9660

when you say you've logged out and back in again, it was definitely to the store right? not just windows?

I vaguely recall having an issue similar to this right after upgrading to windows 10 (I wanted to play Forza), and I think getting the login sorted was what eventually worked. I've also read a lot of people saying that that was what fixed their issue. also, make sure you're using the right microsoft account, or maybe even try making a new one, etc.

another thing I would try is see if there are any error messages in event viewer, it sounds like maybe there are no windows store log messages, but one guy does say you can find it in Event Viewer under

Applications and Services -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Store -> Operational

...Reinstall Windows?

Idk, the Windows store is dogshit TC, it doesn't work for me either. The Nvidia control panel is only on the Windows store and it literally doesn't install for anyone. It has 1.5 stars.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/nvidia-control-panel/9nf8h0h7wmlt?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

I had to go and find an old exe online.
