He forgot his promise he had made when his son was 7 and had sporadic contrast with his real son as he became an adult. All attempts to correct the situation have failed since the son immediately wrote dad off, the stepson even gave the car back so it could go to the real son.

Forgiveness is the key and the real son needs to learn this.

You might want to reread the story. It seemed like the son was the one who put most of the effort in trying to have a relationship with his father. His dad didn't even take the time to check up on him. I mean... what kind of parent doesn't even know what their child was studying for in college?

I did. Even though the son lived with mom, he stopped by dad's shop often. Mom and dad still got along and he stayed with his dad often. It wasn't until mom, the son and his stepdad moved a few states over when in person contact lessened but their relationship was never strained until the car incident. You should probably read it.

I mean, the dad fucked up. But it does seem weird that the son immediately wrote him completely out of his life after this. And wont even contact him at all. But its whatever. Initially, the ex-wife also told the husband not to contact her. But she has talked to him since. Idk. I hope they can at least talk again...

I saw him quite often shop was on his way back from school, he dropped by occasionally to say hello or look at the cars I had in the shop. My wife and ex-wife actually got along well, there was never any issues with my son staying over or staying for dinner

I spoke to my son mostly on the telephone and saw him maybe once every 3-4 months for a long weekend or half a week. The phone calls became less frequent and he said he wanted to focus on his schoolwork.

otherwise I dont think the father would have specifically sent his son a picture of himself giving away the car. Rather than let the son just find out in time... he specifically wanted his son to know his step son got it.

Whats strange about that, though. My mom sends me pictures of stuff happening with the family all the time. Like my sister getting the homemade card from my mom, or when my siblings got new cars. The son said he would be able to come for a few days, so the dad sent some pictures of the stepson getting the car. That seems pretty normal to me. Its possible the stepson wanted to send pictures to show his step brother who he was friends with. It doesnt seem that odd to me...

At least the step son is mature and virtuous enough to return the car. The dad while hard headed at least knows he messed up. Son is in full hard head mode.

If the father never knew his son's major, that alone makes him a complete failure as a dad. Forget about the promise, forget about snapping at the son when he was justifiably angry about the promise being broken, etc, that alone makes him a terrible father. At that point, he's closer to just being a sperm donor than even being a deadbeat dad.

All that shows is that he's a bad dad. That doesn't mean he's the only one in the wrong here. Also, I believe the story mentions that the son was the one that cut back on the contact because he wanted to focus on his school work. That mixed with the stuff the dad was going through probably didn't help. Sure, the dad made the mistake of giving the car away and made things worse with what he said, but he now understands that he was wrong and wants to make amends. Like dedbus said, the ball is now in the son's court... The dad has been trying to find him, but can't...

lolwut? You're reaching for the stars with that ridiculous idea. The only way that a father isn't going to know his son's major is if he not only doesn't ask but also doesn't pay attention to it coming up. And the guy admits that he hadn't paid much attention to his son's life.

How is that a reach? That's very possible. Especially since it's not like the son ever mentioned it, either. If the son did mention it and the dad forgot, that could be bad, though. And he explains why he hasn't really been too into his life at that time. He explains that the son's calls came less and less frequently because the son himself wanted to focus more on school work. Afterwards, the husband himself started having other troubles, as well. Like his business not doing well, wife getting sick (E. coli and kidney failure), and probably other things that could take up time.
