I'm not sure what's on what, so I'm just going to recommend you some of my favorite horror movies.

Alien
Get Out
Us
Hereditary
The Wailing(this movie is on Tubi, a free streaming app with some ads)

If you haven't seen them a lot of the newer wave of horror movies have been fantastic: The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Babadook, and the Suspiria remake are all great. Some lesser known ones worth checking out: Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge, and Relic.

Older horror movies I'd recommend: Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man, the original Suspiria, The Shining, and The Thing. All of these are pretty well-known so you may have seen them. I'll think of some more obscure recommendations too if you're interested.

I only have Netflix and the Canadian one at that. So hopefully these will be available to you. The Ritual was really good. I'll throw in another vote for Hereditary. I thought The Shallows was pretty good if you are scared of sharks. Kind of a slow burn but I really enjoyed The Endless. Okay maybe it's not that scary but I recommend Tremors anyway.

I think something a lot of people here may be missing is that he specifically wants to get spooked. While some of these are great films, they're not particularly scary. (Then there's the secondary issue of what's on streaming.)

The Babadook certainly has a few good jumps, though.

Others that might work (and are on NF):
As Above, So Below
Autopsy of a Jane Doe (it's kinda light on story, though)
Apollo 18

I should also mention Mercy Black wasn't terrible, other than the twist. Kinda have the same issue with Open House's ending.

I think I've watched most of the non-subbed horror on NF (it has a ton of subbed films, many of them Indian. I've never been big into Indian horror.) Two that I haven't watched are Session 9 -- which is supposedly very good -- and The Boy (which I read the spoilers for years ago and it seems like it could be scary)

I can't even remember the last time I've been genuinely spooked during a movie. I consider most of the newer horror films to be psychological thrillers anyway. Some really great films lately, though. Loved Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, Blackcoat's Daughter, The Ritual, etc. Even the sillier ones have been great fun, like Hush, Don't Breathe, Bird Box....

The hardest time I've had watching something in a recent film was a scene during Gerald's Game. Oof. Had to pause for a sec.

The problem is, different people define that in different ways. Are jump scares good enough? Does he want something that will make his skin crawl and leave him feeling creeped out even after the movie is over? Slasher films with tons of gore and more and more elaborate kills? Psychological horror where the uncertainty is what unnerves you?

Does it have to be something supernatural? Murdery? Body horror?

It's hard to know what to recommend if you don't know what sort of horror/suspense someone's looking for.

tbh nothing genuinely scares me for more than a few seconds unless its like some seriously fucked up existential shit. hereditary was disturbing and unsettling as fuck but i wouldnt say i was 'spooked'. idk i guess no movie is actually gonna scare me that much as an adult. i value good acting and writing above everything else and just like creepy shit.

Supposedly Session 9 excels in those regards. Circle was pretty good, but it's not really creepy. And I guess Await Further Instructions was a decent character drama, although it only had a handful of things that might be considered unnerving. All are on NF.

What I might be tempted to recommend is Last Shift, but I'm not sure that any streaming platforms have it for free right now. The story is admittedly a little barebones, but it's really heavy on the spooky shit. The ending is flaky, though.

He's a man. Unless he's overly squeamish, jump scares and *maybe* some suspense scenes are the only thing that might elicit a reaction.

That said, sure, there's the matter of phobias. But you can burn those out over time. Actually, the movie Dread was about that. Halfway decent horror film, although more on the drama side than any real scares.

Read the wiki for that and the synopsis doesn't make any fucking sense. The time-line of events sounds all screwy and then one of the final reveals doesn't make much sense in context (ie, if everybody kidnapped was alive). Did whoever edited the wiki just explain it badly or is it that much of a clusterfuck?

On those streaming services? It would take forever to find everything. However, Hulu has The Houses that October Built -- a found footage about kids checking out dark rides and being terrified by carnies -- which I remember being alright back when it was on NF.
