It's kind of like how Gen 1 of Pokemon is the strongest generation in GameFAQs contests despite the hardcore Pokemon fanbase generally preferring the later generations.

Most people who have tried Mountain Dew are familiar with the original Mountain Dew, but haven't tried most of the later flavors.

Based on the results so far, Code Red is roughly equivalent to Gen 2 of Pokemon (the second strongest Pokemon generation). Code Red also happens to be the second flavor of Mountain Dew to be released after the original flavor, so it's been out long enough that a lot of people have tried that flavor as well.
