ads on youtube mobile can be absolutely ridiculous. i swear i got like a minute ad once in between songs.

i tend to just switch to my mp3 player or audiobooks if i'm on my phone. i also developed a webapp that can stream youtube audio from my computer to the remote internet clients such as my phone, though it's not exactly realtime.

Something has gone terribly wrong when Privacy Badger is an amazingly effective adblocker by itself.

YouTube pushed this thing where theyd automatically add mid video ads to your videos unless you opted out

It ruined a few ASMR videos from creators who didnt opt out for whatever reason (and probably ruins the old videos of creators that left YouTube as well). Makes no fucking sense since Im pretty sure content creators can choose when ads roll in their video. It also just ruins this genre of video because most people talk too softly so you have to crank up the volume. Im perfectly fine the thread preroll ads but mid and even end video ads ruin the purpose of these.

If you abandon the stock browser in favor of Firefox, yes. Even the new gutted mobile firefox specifically supports it.

So you have to watch youtube in browser?

I wonder if brave already blocks ads, I have youtube premium though, unless they start to put ads on that im okay for now

Have you tried youtube vanced? Its a sideloaded at free youtube with all of premiums features, off screen playback, mini player when app switching, download videos for offline

Been watching Youtube on my PS4 lately since it's in a more comfortable spot. God the ads are obnoxious these days. Feels like they're way too common. I'm okay with the ones that let you skip after 5 seconds, but the 15 second ones are utterly annoying.

I wish you could use Ublock Origin on PS4 or smart tvs.

I've never found them bad enough to need blocking. Especially lately. Ever since I went back to playing FFBE, about 90% of my adds have been for that, and they're always the skip after 5 seconds variety.

I have no idea why nobody's thought to do a retropie-style iso image thing that you just write to a micro sd and pop it in.

I dont get why everyone is not on the Adblock train by now. YouTube ads got extremely obnoxious over a decade ago and I havent looked back since.

Actually you can. Look up Youtube Vanced. Doesn't require root. Works great on my tablet.

I was watching some Borderlands gameplay videos the other night and it kept stopping the Top 10 Countdowns in mid sentence to play commercials. No, Im not going to pay for a free service to get fewer ads.

Television is increasing commercials, too. Most one hour programs used to be 44-48 minutes without commercials. Now theyre 40-42. Theyre adding more and more commercials and you eventually notice when they cut off a scene you like to make room for ads. They are also making the breaks quicker and more frequent so that you have to keep the remote in your hand, ready to mute or fast forward.

If TV is making so much money from commercials, then why are we forced to pay for it? Make it a free service and then you can force as much commercials onto us as you want.

YouTube ads got extremely obnoxious over a decade ago and I havent looked back since.

...and that's why.

It's just a death-spiral leading us to 1999's crash all over again, mostly because nobody learned anything from 1999 apart from doubling down on evading ads.

Obnoxious and intrusive ads drive people to block them, leading website operators to add more increasingly-obnoxious and intrusive ads in an attempt to make up lost revenue. Repeat until everyone goes broke and sites start going extinct.

The only way to break the cycle is for websites to actually sell ads, instead of just plopping some mystery <script> tags into the HTML head and expecting it to be a magic money button.

I always wondered where this entitlement to no ads for free came from. We literally come from a time where 30%+ of tv were ads.

Then Youtube came out and wasn't that big, so it didn't have ads. Nobody cares enough to make a business out of it. And people were like "we're entitled to this place never having commercials" for some reason. Tv also didn't have commercial when it started, I imagine. Now Im kind of just interested in the answer to that. How long did it take for tv to get ads?

Lately, I get two six-second ads in a row, one of them being about the coronavirus, when I look at stuff on the Youtube app.

Luckily, I get no ads at all on a browser with uBlock Origin.

I didn't ask for content from taboola.com. doubleclick.net, moatads.com, go-impulse.net, or any of the various domains those pull out of a hat.

Seriously, turn off your adblockers and surveillance-blockers, and this site loads up about twenty-two domains with each pageload, with each one running obfuscated javascript and writing various cookies. Only gamefaqs.gamespot.com and cbsistatic.com are needed for the site to function.

I use mobile and don't have ad blockers. Sometimes they get invasive here. But rarely. Most of them, my brain doesn't even register anymore.
