I did a Pokemon one way back.

I was playing a Muk shutdown deck and made a kid with a Charizard and 3 Water energy cry.

Then some dude kicked my ass with a Zapdos.

Most of my experiences have been positive. Occasionally a smelly person or someone who is a little too nerdy but that's par for the course.

Wasn't really a tournament but as a kid I played the Pokemon TCG at the local Wizards of the Coast store. It was clearly meant for kids but there'd be the occasional 20-something neckbeard there who would fucking destroy everyone because he was obviously into the meta and we were all just dumb kids.

It was pretty cool tho, you got to fill out wins in a little stamp book and after enough you got badges just like from the game. I think I got 2 or 3 before the store closed down. You could also challenge one of the store's employees and if you beat him you could get a free booster.

Pokemon when I was a kid

It was a horrible experience, tbh. Weird people there, the host was smoking, it was in the basement of some weird building

That sounds really cool. Would be dope if a store was dedicated to a yu-gi-oh version of that in a battle city or duelist kingdom/island kinda way

depends how you define "tournament", because I don't think I've ever attended one with more than like 40ish people

but yeah I've done a decent number of small MtG events

If draft/prerelease for MtG counts, then yeah. I did get a poster for having the best W-L ratio last time I went.

No but I went with a friend who played competitive Yugioh. It was at a comic shop that shared a rec room with a tae kwon do dojo.

Mostly just a bunch of nerds outside my circle. The owners sold Red Baron French bread pizzas and soda.

In card games with draft (where you open a pack, choose one card around, pass it, etc. for a few packs (3 in MTG)) sometimes people will do "rare redrafts", where the person who wins gets to choose from all the rares opened and so on down to the person who got last.

Hypothetically this is justified as "This way people try to win, instead of picking the $100 card over one that's better for their deck", but in practice it means people who open good draft rares (which are usually bad in constructed formats) get an easier win AND get the money cards.

the prizes for the booster draft are the valuable cards opened from the packs, instead of store credit or sealed booster packs.

it's a way to keep the costs down, but it has the terrible side effect of taking all value away from those who did poorly. basically, unless all 8 drafters have roughly the same chance of winning the draft, it's a shitty way for sharks to prey on weaker drafters. which commonly leads to them not drafting any more.
