Haven't played it in years and apparently Steam gave me the special edition for free

I figured Special Edition would be the one with all the DLC.

Pretty sure it's all included in the Special Edition

Apparently back in like 2013 or 14 I bought the "Legendary Edition" of regular Skyrim, which bundled all the expansions and DLC together. It also apparently entitled me to a free upgrade to the Special Edition when it came out

No reason not to go with the special edition.

Mostly depends if the mods you want have SE ones or not, but otherwise SE as it runs much better. Most have been ported, but bound to be some that haven't been yet.

It is compatible with basically every major type of mod. All the greats have been ported.

It wasn't that way for about 2 - 3 years, but by this past year, there's almost nothing significant I can think of that isn't compatible. The performance gains are so great most modders have transitioned over. And they're very noticeable in gameplay if you compare. Crashes less too.

There may be some mods missing, but in my opinion it's still worth it to go with SE.

The way SE touches up the game visually is minor. Bethesda didn't really put too much effort into that. But, the bigger thing is its performance upgrade, it's a big deal to the game and to modding.

Congratulations on free Skyrim SE. That's a really great value.

Also just fyi there is a multiplayer mod for Skyrim that is in a very decent state. Gameplay mostly runs smooth and it has a significant portion of quests playable, though not all. They have their own servers too so you can just install the mod and jump in. Pretty fun.
