Cant believe this got overlooked despite so many delays

Lots of games can potentially cause a seizure in someone who has epilepsy but the brain dance sequences of the game literally use the same red and white flashing of colors that doctors use to induce a seizure in a patient when they need to see what exactly is happening in their brain during an episode.

The sequence is unskippable in game but theyre working on an update to change it. A reviewer already suffered a major seizure while playing the game

Thanks for the heads up. As an epileptic myself, I appreciate the warning. Also as an epileptic, I don't appreciate @Veedrock- 's comment. Could we maybe as a courtesy not belittle those with preexisting conditions that they have no control over?

That explains it. The concept of a seizure is 'funny' until you actually have one or see someone have one. In reality it's horrifically traumatic, and you can do a lot of damage to yourself when you lose total control. Twice I bashed my head on something going down and was concussed for weeks after. Once I rug-burnned half my face off seizing on the carpet. I also get to deal with the side effects of my medication, including balding when my family has zero history of it, manic depression, and constant dry mouth.

So I suppose at the end of the day, being called 'not a real gamer' is the least of my issues. I'm not trying to be a bummer or garner sympathy, in fact I'd rather not. But I'd still appreciate it if people didn't feel compelled to make light of seizures.

If you don't mind going into more detail, I'm curious what it's actually like when you have a seizure, at least in your head, I have no idea if you're conscious or not throughout the entire thing, it's just not something people talk about a lot in my circles.
Also, is most of the damage that's caused just from the fact that you lose control of your body and fall on things, or is there some sort of brain trauma associated with it?

I don't remember anything during the seizure, you're out cold. And that's the scary thing. You just lose control all of a sudden. Doesn't matter if you are in a safe place or on top of a ladder... you just lose consciousness and any control of your body, and it can happen with little to no warning. You can get an 'aura', like a feeling it might happen, but honestly I feel a semblance of an aura almost every day so it's hard to know if it's imminent or not. It's weird though after. You know when you wake up from a nap and you have no idea how long you were out or what time it is? That's the closest thing to it.

The damage is both from falling, and the exhaustion from all of your muscles shaking and flailing simultaneously. If you don't hit anything on the way down, you just feel really tired both physically and mentally after but you mostly feel better again after resting, maybe a little queasy

Its very rare for someone to be conscious at all during a seizure

Ive only had one happen to me so Im not considered epileptic, but there is just a blank gap in my memory. I dont even remember the events leading up to it. First thing I experienced was sort of a sensation of being put back into my body but it feeling wrong and almost nauseating. I thought maybe I had been sleep walking until I found my glasses on the floor and realized they had blood all over them from where I had hit my head. Finally realized it was a seizure when I texted my wife about how my tongue was all chewed up.

Ah, all right, this is going to sound possibly really insulting, but, one of my old dogs had seizures and when I was a teen, my mom told me that she was fine, and to just make sure she's ok when she wakes up and give her a lot of love.
I'm happy mom wasn't just saying things and she was ok during it, she was never hurt during it, but I was still worried for her.

Pretty much every video game carries it, because you can all but guarantee that just about every game is going to end up flickering from time to time (even if it's just as a result of clipping the camera out of the map) and that's something epileptics should be aware of before playing, but this sounds like it's a particularly egregious example that's extremely likely to cause seizures in photosensitive people. That warrants special mention.

Those warnings are pretty pointless since most people ignore them anyway. I guess it's also kinda like alcohol websites that give the age gate when they're not legally obligated.

Maybe it's just me, but isn't it pretty much a given that a cyberpunk game taking place in something called "Night City" is extremely likely to have flahing lights and stuff?

It sounds like this goes even beyond that, with specific scenes that are all but deliberately designed to trigger seizures. Flashing lights are to be expected, but not to this scale.

Revelation34 posted...

They're largely a CYA measure, preventing publishers from being sued if somebody has a seizure while playing their game. Most people don't really ignore them so much as they accept that it's a risk and move forward anyway because they're not in any particular danger. Those epileptics with a history of seizures induced by video games do tend to consider it more seriously, including many that give up gaming altogether for it.

I honestly thought those warnings were like hot sauce and they put that shit on everything.

It's one of those things that every game/movie does it to protect themselves from liability, so even as an epileptic you tend to tune it out because you were always fine before. So when there's an especially egregious example, there's nothing to differentiate it from everything else. Like the newest star wars for example, I completely disregarded the warnings because I've seen 8 other sw movies no problem, but then I spent half the movie with my hands over my eyes. Although apparently that was for the best, considering.

Lots of things can be triggers for seizures. Low blood sugar, alcohol or drugs, lack of sleep, dehydration, over exertion. Essentially it's about 'lowering your threshold'. When you are rested, medicated, hydrated, feeling 100%, your threshold is as high as it can be. Any one of those things can lower your threshold for having a seizure. So you really have to take care of yourself. It's also one reason cbd is so effective, because cbd promotes homeostasis.
