Live action remakes of most things suck most of the time. Why would this be any different? It was always going to be soulless since at its core they are copying something that already existed and werent trying to do anything new. Its why modern Disney also sucks

I kinda like it.

1. They could never have pulled this off if it was just trying to literally be a beat for beat remake. An adaptation needs to add some new flair to it. Also the fight choreography would have been really hard to pull off in live action.
2. I think they got the essence of all three pretty well done. It was always going to be weird hearing different voices for these iconic characters but I think they all act pretty similar to their anime counterparts
3. It is weird to have Spike look so old compared to the other two. Again it is something that will take some time to get used to. I always felt Spike to be young and aloof despite his past but this makes him look almost... I dunno, haggard? Works in regards to his relationship with Vicious and Julia but not for the other 75% of the anime.

Like, Cowboy Bebop was an anime about regular people and this is shaping to be regular people acting like they're in an anime.

Which isn't bad, don't get me wrong, and I'm not saying this particular element was done bad. If it wants to be something, this series needs an identity that's distinct from its progenitor.

Also there should be more of works that are like what this is, but I don't know if what this is specifically captures what I've always thought Cowboy Bebop is, but then again I'm not sure it should either.

Then again, this is just a teaser, so it's entirely possible not remotely the entire series will be like this.

I don't know. This teaser was just about all action, and Faye in action has always been snide and grumpy, and she has some fighting talent. It's just not shown a lot and they spend more time on her being suave and sexy. Doing so would be out of tone for this teaser, I think.

I kinda like this. They're going with a 70's cheesy action vibe and it works for me.

The way they constantly bicker is definitely on point, at least.

The show is trying so hard to be an authentic bebop that I have to give it a chance. It really doesn't feel like a cash grab or someone just using the license to tell their own story, and outside of a few minor tweaks they've largely avoided the whole "modernization" shit that turns licensed franchises against their audience. Plus they brought Yoko Kanno back. It's like the little engine that could.

My biggest issue is still that Vicious looks really bad in live action. Like really bad. Other than that, yeah, as others have said cheesy on purpose but I can dig that. Still waiting on Radical Edward.

On a second watch I kinda like it even more.

Their banter felt good. Like stuff they would say to one another. While it didn't always feel EFFORTLESS like on the anime, the pains of working with real living actors rather than animation.

The smirk that John Cho has right before he starts fighting with the piece of rebar or whatever? Perfect. Absolutely 100% a Spike mannerism. Faye going off to do it on her own before coming back with the group and blaming the boys? 100% Faye. Jet just trying to keep them all together to get the job done? 100% Jet

It is like the just chose the most well known Asian actor they knew instead of the best person for the job.

It looks less realistic than the anime version. Someone correct me, but I don't recall Spike ever kicking someone and going into a backflip from that.

I like this besides Faye, big miscast in my opinion.

Not based on this video. Spike is still super laid back and Jet is still super serious get-it-done man. They always seemed to have a fraternal relationship, so them switching ages shouldnt affect things too much.

If nothing else, that teaser increases my desire to watch it. Regardless of it being for multiple complex reasons, that's a sell.

Faye is Singaporean in the anime by the way. We also know Jet reads Chinese normally (probably his native language, when he is reading the news at his computer it's in Chinese, he also points to the Chinese no smoking portion of the sign when explaining to Spike in and episode) and Spike was in a Chinese triad. I don't have a problem with the casting in the live action but people seem to have assumptions about characters ethnicities when all we know is they come from Chinese linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Everything else is a guess.

it's trying way too hard. and the comedy is cartoon network quality. also why the fuck are they playing with the camera frame? i know it "looks cool" but it has absolutely nothing to do with the show itself and it stopped being interesting after 3 seconds.

they should call it "cowboy bebop: we're trying way too hard"

As a guy who absolutely loves Cowboy Bebop, and who'd rate is as one of the best all time shows ever, I loved this!

It's not trying to replicate the cartoon, because that's impossible, but at the same time it's going for having an actual soul and personality, it's doing something that stands out, and that's all the show needed to do for me.

Best two moments: Faye throwing the bowl of noodles at the bad guys, and her dead ass looking at the camera while they're all shooting. Very anime Faye moments.

And I wasn't sure about Cho before this, but I think he's great now. Go back and watch it again, listen to his voice, his cadence. It straight up sounds like Steve Blum talking.

Eh. Appearance-wise, she's the only one I like of the three. I really dig how they adapted her outfit.
