Dunno, haven't played it myself.

Most of what I've heard about it was along the lines of "great game, but poor sequel"

I like Chrono Cross well enough but it didn't do literally everything right let's not get carried away here

i liked some parts of it, but the story is completely nonsensical. it was kingdom hearts level storytelling before kingdom hearts.

they basically tell you right at the very end of the game that this entire game was just some set up to make you strong because Crono and all his friends failed to save the world cuz fuck em why not. its just a big fuck you to the series.

i love suikoden 2 and did not find it to be a problem at all. but the characters in tht were far more interesting and suikoden 2 actually had a really good plot behind it so the comparison is not fair at all.

suikoden 2 blows chrono cross away in every conceivable category except for the soundtrack. it even had its own war mini game that was super fun.

i did not play the other suikoden games

I didn't necessarily want a sequel, but, killing Crono, Marle, and Luca off screen, then parading their ghost child form around for no reason and no explanation given as to why never sat right with me. Plus the whole Guile situation.

That alone was bad enough, but to add insult to injury, they lost to a joke villain from the original game.

I loved CC but CT was much better.

Partly because it had an actually coherent plot.

It took everything the first game did right and expanded upon that.

It was a shitty game, tbh

• 134 Characters and 3 Party slots, one of which has to be the MC
• Having to grind them all out between Bosses because of how the Leveling worked
• Battles were slow
• I hated the Color Wheel thing. Red is weak against Blue, Black/White, Green/Yellow [I think]
• Only things I liked were the music and the twist in the middle

And I don't think it's a horrible game, I did have fun with it.

Chrono Cross is a really bad video game. Not only is the gameplay bad, but it's the one example of a Square game where the story and characters suck. You got this weird Chrono Trigger tie in tacked on at the end, and the literal 100 playable characters makes it so nobody gets fleshed out, nor do you end up caring about any of them at all.

So weird the love people have for this game.

there were always a ton of weird fan theories involving saving schala at the pivotal point of the game.

it was like square had an ear on that and decided to throw her in. but she was blond now for no reason?

I prefer Crimson Echoes/Flames of Eternity.

I like to think that Crono and Marle are still alive, just trapped in a timeline where all the other timelines are unstable and time gates fly all over the place as they try to make all those timelines right again.

things not working out well for characters or places from the original game does not instantly equate to "shitting on the original"

chrono cross is a really dark game and a lot of its themes delve deeper into stuff that chrono trigger only briefly touched on like alternate timelines and the concept of predestination. but even then ultimately it has the same core ideal that if you try hard enough and refuse to accept the hand the world gives you, you can break free from your fate. cross' brooding leading up to its happy ending doesn't work without trigger's idealism as a contrast to it

What? As a sequel, it did NOTHING right.

it did so many things wrong. that's not how you write a plot, or story, or characters, or dialogue. the numerous characters is like a prime example of quantity over quality. the battle system itself was both strange and a nuisance to take care of. that's not even bringing up the fact that it's the second game of a series.

it did do one thing amazingly well though. that soundtrack. goddamn. that thing is beautiful.

i also remember the layouts of the levels/puzzles/maps, and they were fun and interesting sometimes, so it gets a few bonus points for that too.
