Hello. I am reading Red Mars which is a very good book about terraforming Mars (which isn't about terraforming Mars) and it's giving me an itch I've had many times but could never fully scratch. I want to play a game that makes you feel like you're surviving Mars (Surviving Mars is not what I'm looking for) or building a colony from scratch. Automation, survival, chemistry. If you've ever played the Gregtech Minecraft mod, which is known for extremely complex processing systems where you can get useful chemicals (or junk) from anything with that obviously includes the building mechanics of Minecraft, I want something like that, where the goal is dependent on using those resources to live instead of it being something you can almost entirely ignore.

Basically, I want Spacechem, Factorio, Minecraft and Surviving Mars rolled up into one. I'm sure this doesn't exist but it's worth a shot to ask

that is the opposite of what i want here, regardless of how much i adore just cause 2

Barotrauma, perhaps? It's better experienced with people, and is about travelling through a Europan Ocean and a subaquatic hellscape while everything tries to kill you, but the feel is similar.

"Barotrauma is a 2D co-op survival horror submarine simulator, inspired by games like FTL: Faster Than Light, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress and Space Station 13". That's certainly a promising start. Dwarf Fortress is actually a feeling I forgot to mention too. I'll certainly look into this and see if I can get some friends interested. Thanks!

Yeah Subnautica came to mind reading the opening post but of course it's very unlike Mars >_> It has survival, building, and resource collecting/processing stuff you may be after but you're not building a colony with others, you're entirely alone.

i love the mars trilogy. they're all great but i love books 1 & 3 especially. his collection of short stories in the setting is interesting, too

To clarify, I'm not looking for crafting systems (which I'd probably have to go out of my way to avoid finding), nor really a colonization/extra-terrestial aesthetic. I'm looking for a game where a notable part of it is building and designing a system that, say, harvests raw material and centrifuges it into metallics and earths, the former of which you apply acidic treatments upon to start isolating individual hydroxides which are then processed into useful metals which go through their own system of refining to make actual materials, and the latter of which is part of the first step in a separate process that results in a fancy farm or whatever. I want depth, the kind of which I've only seen attempted in some Minecraft and Factorio mods, which both have their shortcomings

idk, when I play games with crafting I like recipes with super long chains that you have to work towards, like I always tried making the PDA in Terraria because I like the process. I like turning garbage into something useful. I still want a game, just with this aspect prioritized
