i really want to get a pool but i've been hating the negative environmental impact they can have. i try to do what i can to limit my pollution to the planet.

https://www.hgtv.com/outdoors/outdoor-spaces/pools-and-water-features/natural-swimming-pools-101

they look so beautiful and take no chemicals because you have a separate pond that filters the water.

You live in a place that is a testament to mans hubris and unwillingness to let nature have its way. Embrace it. Get whatever pool you want.

I wish I had a pool. I love swimming.

You have to be willing to maintain it. Requires more work than you think it does.
Had one for a portion of my childhood. It ended up being neglected (like basically everything else in my life).

everything i'm reading says natural pools are less maintenance. can you show me something that says otherwise? i'm trying to do research.

Pools are expensive (natural ones over 50% more), require tons of maintenance, and bring down your property values. If you want to swim, just live near (not on, that is insanely expensive) the beach.

Oh wait, you live in the desert. Ugh.... swim in the sand?

everything i'm reading says natural pools are more cost effective because they require less maintenance and no chemicals. i'd really love to see where you guys are reading this.

i also haven't read anything about it decreasing your property value lol

and it's impossible to buy homes rn idk why you're talking about me making some type of interstate move just to live near a beach instead of buying a natural pool. that's even less cost effective.

It could be something about the fact you like in what? NM or AZ? Can't remember. It's a dractically different climate so the maintenance might be easier. You won't have like, tree leaves gunking it up.

People want natural You have to think along those lines, being environmentally conscious is really trendy at the moment.
In saying that, she says, it is a niche market because they are more expensive.
The pools, she estimates, might cost about $80,000 for an average sized pool of 18 by 4 metres, while a conventional pool might cost between $50,000-$60,000.

i also haven't read anything about it decreasing your property value lol

Pools in general decrease property values because you are decreasing the potential market of your house. If people don't want pools and want something like, say, a garden or a large patio, it makes it harder for them to justify buying your house. Really, any large addition to your backyard that requires extensive amounts of work to remove decreases the property value. Having a fruit/vegitable garden is probably the most environmentally responsable while being easy to replace for the next owner of your house.

Probably something you should have thought of before you bought your house. :)

Yeah, what I'm reading is that they are mostly self sufficient because they filter through plant life in a retaining pool built next to the pool itself. you never have to drain or refill the pool either.

well it makes sense the upfront cost would be more expensive - you essentially have to build two pools. but the long term expenses are less so it really would be equivalent. that's what i have been reading - i thought you meant just more expensive at all. i am okay with having to pay more upfront for a natural pool. it is still affordable for me.

oh that is absolutely not an issue here because everyone wants a pool lol

i am also going to have a garden in my yard. i have a 7200 sqft yard. i am planning a fruit/veg/herb garden with some fruit trees, a natural pool with a patio, and a shed in that space. i think i'm being as environmentally conscious as i can by going for a natural pool. apparently their popularity here is actually rising.

not super concerned about my property value anyways because i want to live in my house, not update it and sell it for more money.

sure if i could have afforded to i would have lol idk what type of life you live where you can just afford to live anywhere at any time but i'm really happy for you

At any rate, I strongly suggest you talk to whatever sorts of companies do pools like this, get an estimate for costs, and read up on how to maintain it before you do anything.

i didn't ask for the most basic advice on how to hire a contractor. i'm asking if people have experience specific to natural pools. i know how to hire a contractor.

So a few things.

First, consider a waterfall instead of a side pool, it does the same thing (filtering the water), and it looks amazing, creates a soothing sound, and the pound in the bottom can even have Koi fish in it etc (I won't tell you about the horror story involving my koi and racooons!!).

Second, if you build it yourself like in that video above, I totally want you to video tape it for us lol:)

Yes I really want to get a waterfall area or grotto. I'm definitely going to talk to a couple of these local design and construction companies to see what I can get that is in my budget.

I'm absolutely not building it myself lol
