I used to have a local spot where I was a "regular" so I showed up alone alot, but I had a good group of friends that'd always be there, and I was close with one of the bartenders.

Usually there's no problem. Most of the time there's someone around for decent conversation, whether its another patron or the bartender. I like to be left alone though.

I do that all the time, though some bars are better suited for making contact on your own with a stranger than others. And eventually you get to know other regulars.

I did that enough times that when I go now there's always someone I know.

Now if I was at a new bar/city I would still do it but I'd keep the drinks low.

I did it in my mid-20s fairly often. I lived close enough to walk to a couple and I was single. Honestly it never did me much good. I only do it now on work trips if there's one close enough to walk to.
