SPRINGFIELD, Mo. A school district in Missouri announced it will reinstate spanking this school year but with a parental caveat.

Cassville School School District superintendent Merlyn Johnson said he did not take the job a year ago with a plan to reinstate corporal punishment a disciplinary measure the 1,900-student Barry County district abandoned in 2001.

"But it is something that has happened on my watch and I'm OK with it," Johnson said.
Cassville is a small town with a population just under 4,000 people, about 60 miles southwest of Springfield, near the Arkansas border.

Parents were recently notified of a policy approved in June by the school board to once again allow spanking in school but only as a last resort and with written permission from parents.
Each family will be asked to opt in or out.

Describing Cassville as a "very traditional community in southwest Missouri," Johnson said parents have long expressed frustration that corporal punishment was not allowed in the district.
"Parents have said 'why can't you paddle my student?' and we're like 'We can't paddle your student, our policy does not support that,'" he said. "There had been conversation with parents and there had been requests from parents for us to look into it."

Johnson said families in Cassville have reacted differently than others on social media from outside the area.
"We've had people actually thank us for it," he said. "Surprisingly, those on social media would probably be appalled to hear us say these things but the majority of people that I've run into have been supportive."
He added: "We respect the decision of every parent, whatever decision they make."

How the fuck can people justify children being beaten, when it is illegal to do the exact same thing to an adult? You'd see jail time for the things society says is acceptable to do to children.

And children are the ones who often don't know better and need you to teach them. I'm disgusted my own country still allows it and disgusted another country is regressing in regards to it.

Is this even legal? I feel like even if you opt in you would be able to sue the district for this and press assault charges on whoever did it.

Corporal punishment is legal in America unfortunately. Many states have made it illegal in schools, which Missouri hasn't.

Let's make a simple pros and cons list for the state
Pros: it is technically habitable
Cons: everything

Awful shit, but somehow still better than Florida. They don't even need the parents permission there.

Even if you're okay with spanking your child...Do you really trust an underpaid, overworked, glorified babysitter to do that?

Also...Are the teachers being required to use this as a form of discipline? They've apparently gotten complaints about teachers not using spanking as a discipline tool, so once it's allowed, will they be expected to do it? How long until a teacher gets accused of smacking little Sofia's ass because he's a pervert, and she's an innocent princess who obviously didn't do any thing wrong?

Hopefully the teachers have the decency to not beat a child even if the shittu parents gave permission.

When my wife was applying for teaching positions 13 years ago many of the districts mentioned that they still spank/paddle and she had to include on her app if she would be able to administer that punishment. So it's not just this district in Missouri

The local town, the biggest of the county, i went to school in had like 1,500 residents max.

The county wasn't much bigger than like 15-20K.

Class size was still around 200 people.

Just cause a town is small in number doesn't mean the class size will always be small
