Independent creators of other media? In term of commercial viability especially.

Indie movies exist, you but they most likely won't get any screening internationally, or even most big theaters, nor streaming services pick up on them that much either.

Indie books usually end up as webnovel, etc which some can be picked up by named publisher but until then they don't do the creator much in term of financial or recognition.

Indie musician have it a bit easier as i think it's easier to get your band into spotify etc and many platforms to sell your music, plus undeground scene has been the life of musicians since time immemorial.

But with games, steam as platform is just open as it can be, and significant amount do make it big in term of financial and artistic success. Fucking hollow knight has a fan youtube channel that essentially allow them to earn a living making videos about HK, stardew valley is as famous if not more than the games that inspired it. I think it's cool that our hobby ended up allowing various creators from all over the globe to flourish and sell their creation to the point of commercial viability.

The downside is we have to sift tons of lazy garbage, but i take that over a market with high barrier of entry that is by each day becoming more and more corporationized.

Not really. It's still extraordinarily low odds that you make it at the end of the day. You just have to remember the scope of the number of shitty games out there.

Every gamer should know games enough to know if they are making shovelware I dont think those people are really trying to hit the big time, probably just getting some experience at that point

Online content creators could maybe be a counterargument but I suppose that's not really another medium.
