I think it'll be one of those franchises that never fully dies, like they'll randomly put one out every 7-10 years or so

SC6 did pretty well from what I can tell. With new Tekken around the corner though it will probably be a couple years before we see a SC7.

It's kind of hard to promote a fighting game centered primarily around T&A in an era when boobies are seen as a bad thing.

SC6 was awesome, but SC3 was the peak.
The biggest problem is that they moved away from total customization and started limiting options.

Soul Calibur VI did really well and probably saved the franchise but for some unexplicable reason Namco seems to prefer that utter dumpster fire that is TEKKEN so it could be while before we get a new game.

Im not sure they know what to do with the series anymore. 5 was super adventurous in terms of the roster, so much so that they pissed off a lot of the old fans. They then backpedaled and made 6 the safest, most boring iteration possible, and that got a lukewarm response. I think people are just over it.

Same, which is why it makes me sad to see SC5 and SC6 not be very popular. I tried out other fighting games between those two (because I didn't think SC6 would happen) including Tekken, and I didn't like any of them nearly as much as I liked SC.

I really liked the new Soul Calibur. Tekken 7 is now the best selling in the franchise, so they're definitely going to continue to build on that.

Well, the guy who ran Tekken from the third game onward is like the head of the division and "coincidentally" had involvement in SCIV which was seen as a lesser game in the series than those that had come before. SCV flopped for multiple reasons but they saved with SCVI. Now they just need another director to give a damn about it like the people who made the ones that aren't 4 and 5.

2 was perfect

No reason to change the formula. 2 made most other fighting games look bad. 3 was an utter disappointment in that department, for all it did well, it entirely failed to capture the magic of 2 and the series has never quite recovered. Ideally, we see a Soul Calibur 2 reboot with lots of references to forgotten PS2 era fighting game tropes, and snippets of long-winded stories from back in that day to create some relevance or backbone. Same. The 8 way run make the franchise way more interesting than the other 2d fighters. I realized the reason I love Soulcalibur so much is because of the movement

They alternate Tekken/SC main releases. SC 6 was more recent so the next game is Tekken and then we'll get a new SC.

Honestly Soul Calibur's popularity peaked with 2.

They didn't do the series any favors going exclusive with 3. Alienating Nintendo and Xbox fans.

Then 4, while good, added Star Wars characters, who just did not fit the style or theme of the series at all.

Then 5 was just all around mediocre and lacking single player content.

So the series has been struggling for a while. I don't think it's dead yet, though.

As someone who is heavily kept up with SC, because it's one of my favorite fighting game series ever, SC6 was suppose to have a Season 3 of DLC's with Aeon (lizardman) datamined to be the next DLC character with an un-announced guest character and a bunch of cosmetics. Unfortunately, Covid happened right in the middle of the project and comparing sales numbers to the playerbase that was left (it wasn't much because SC6 netcode was ass), it would've been too expensive and not feasible hence why it only got 2 seasons of DLC.

epik_fail1 posted...

That is because for some reason, at the time, they were primarily only looking at the Japanese market which they found more Japanese bought the game on the PS2 (more of them owned PS2's, as well as the majority of the FGC) as oppose to the western market where the majority of them bought it on the GC (because of Link). SC3 wanted to do something different, hence the character creation that would end up using most of their budget, which meant they couldn't port it to 3 other systems like they did in SC2. As you can see, it bit them in the ass because it didn't sell nearly as well as SC2 did.

Yep, Bandai Namco is keeping to a cycle for both series. The only difference is Tekken will always receive a bigger budget while Soul Calibur gets the paltry in comparison.

DOA6 was just kind of like, a train wreck on every level. In an attempt to be taken more seriously, they aggressively toned down the T&A, but that pissed off the actual DOA fanbase. So they put the T&A back in behind an absurd amount of paywalls and micro transactions, implemented even more micro transactions, and continued to tone down the overall absurdity.

A trainwreck especially considering that DOA5 was really popular and well received.

They exist. I know because I'm one of them. I first got interested in the series with SC2 because of Link's appearance, but then I grew to really enjoy the gameplay and wanted more. Then SC3 and SC4 never came to Nintendo systems (I did try that one spin-off game on the Wii that had Lloyd from Tales Of Symphonia as a guest character) and I finally bought an Xbox 360 after that so I got back into the series with SC5. I also re-bought SC2 with its HD/Online version on the 360 when that came out despite that version obviously not having Link in it.

This. Although I went from 2 to 5 since although I owned a PS2, I never got the chance to play 3 and 4 as a kid. Started with Link, but then main'd Taki. Bought 5 and was disappointed at the removal of Taki. >_> I 100% main'd her because of her Ninja playstyle and not because of her basically naked skin suit with the big boobs that looks more like body paint. I would usually pick the white armor suit when available anyway. I just like Ninja type characters and her playstyle fit me best.

At least Taki had a successor in SC5 with a similar fighting style, Natsu. My main in SC2 (aside from Link) was Talim, and she didn't even get that much. I actually ended up maining Ezio of all people (despite never playing or having any desire to play an Assassin's Creed game) in SC5. Ezio's moveset felt like a mix between Talim's speedy close-range attacks and Link's projectiles to mix up the tempo, so he was perfect for me.

I also played with Nightmare and Raphael a lot in both games as secondaries, and a lot of my created characters in SC5 used those styles since you couldn't give a created character Ezio's style through normal means. Had to use an external save editor for that.
