SM64 is fantastic, the formula has just been improved so much upon.

Galaxy 2 is still my favorite.

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > Odyssey > 3D World > 64 > 3D Land > Sunshine

Also all are top games, it's very impressive. Often when people have one they don't don't like a lot it's because it's held to the high standards of the rest.

Theres a pretty wide gap for me between Odyssey and Galaxy and Galaxy and 3D World though.

I'm just not big on platformers. Vast majority of what I play is RPGs. I only played 3D Land as a GameStop rental.

But also yes, I never had a 64, GameCube, or Wii U.

64 has aged poorly and is easily the worst of them all

the top four there are pretty close, then a bit of a gap down to 64 and 3D Land, then another little gap down to Sunshine

I replayed 64 when 3D All-Stars came out, actually the first time I finished it. Same for Sunshine. Neither is anywhere near up there, 64 has heavily aged and Sunshine has serious problems with repetition although theres a lot it does better also.

Other games have since improved on it but no main line mario game comes close to sucking

You know.......
I used to consider 64 as my favorite game of all time
I beat it like 10 times
It's my "go to" game for when I don't feel like playing anything else

But
All those times I played on PC. On emulator. Used SaveStates sometimes. (Not abusing them, but merely as "checkpoints" here and there)
And...2 months ago I played it again. On the Switch.
And I don't know if it's because I hate the Switch controls or because of the lack of save states...but I suffered.
It wasn't fun at all!

The game is far, far too punishing. A single mistake and you get kicked off the stage. Mario getting burned and "aha ha hah ah aha" himself to death or very precise cannon shots or getting kicked to outside the castle when you die in "Wing Mario over the Rainbow".
But the worst offender is THE DAMN CAMERA

Maybe one day they will remake Mario 64 and give it a real, 360 camera that you can move with a stick. Maybe then I will play it again

Exactly, and nothing in it is so hard tou can't get it with a few tries

Sunshine is the most important source of bad Bowser lore, that's for sure

All excellent though. Barely remember 3D Land so leaving it out, and I haven't played Sunshine enough to rank.

I simply have to believe the people putting 64 at the top have not played that game in decades. Yeah, definitely at the bottom for me. Finally accepted that it's worse than Sunshine thanks to replaying them on 3D All Stars.

3D World is excellent though and glad it's getting love. Guess my ranking would be something like

Odyssey > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy = 3D World/Bowser's Fury > 3D Land > Sunshine > 64

Yes 3D All Stars is where I realized 64 is actually not even a good game. Its aged so poorly. Sunshine is still very playable, but 64 is a mess.

Sunshine was barely playable on release, certain shines at least lol
