They like to teach that the war was fought over state's rights, and that's true in a sense. The Union was fighting because the Confederacy DIDN'T have the right to secede.

Technically, if a guy reaches on to some train tracks to pick up a dime, but then trips and falls and a train runs over his legs, getting an extra dime is still a benefit he's gained from the whole situation. Saying "Look on the bright side, at least you found a dime!" probably isn't going to go over too well with the guy who's lapsing in and out of consciousness as the paramedics desperately try to slow the bleeding so he can actually live long enough to have a traumatic disability to overcome, but it's not technically wrong. It's just useless, insensitive, and does nothing to justify the overall situation. I believe that's what he was getting at.

Yeah, I understood the point being made but I guess we'd just have a discussion about the definition of benefit because for me you need to have a lasting advantage for something to be a benefit.

ie a dime would not outweigh the cost of therapy and medical care so would not being a benefit
slavery has unmeasurable costs that would outweight the "benefit" of "learning skills"

but outside of the argument of the definition of benefit i think we all agree anyway

Being forced to learn a skill against your will isn't really a positive imo. I get that farming is a good skill but they didn't want to be farmers. They wanted to be free people.

That's what I was getting at, else you could argue that a slave getting fed most days is a benefit (:

yes being forced into slavery is bad but do you honestly believe that many of them weren't farmers before being forced onto a ship

not at all my post clearly states that many were most likely farmers before becoming slaves to greedy farmers looking for free labor immorally and unethically

it doesnt make sense that a self sustaining culture knew how to farm that is a very wrong statement
also i can agree that slavery is bad but can disagree they didnt want to be farmers they just wanted to be the free farmers they were before becoming enslaved

And if they were already free farmers in their home country what benefit did they receive becoming enslaved farmers in a foreign country? They already had the skills. What was their benefit?
