Just got through and 3rd class trial in Trigger Happy Havoc and then found out Monokuma's spy.

I'm really liking it. I've played VNs like Zero Escape and AI, so I'm used to coincdences, obtuseness and Deus ex machinas. But Hifumi temporarily coming back from the dead after being cried on, just to give the killer's last name, which we thought was a first name, made me laugh.

I envy you assumingly are going into these games unspoiled. I had a lot of game 1 spoiled by YouTube by coincidence, and a bit of game 2. So, my first unspoiled game was the third, and I'll paraphrase my emotions to avoid spoilers: it sucks playing the last game while still wanting more.

All I was spoiled on was that Junko wasn't actually dead. I was aware of Danganronpa, so hard to avoid that one

Overall I think the first game is the best one, it was a fresh concept and some of the twists during the trials were pretty good. I also liked how you got the skills via free time in the first game versus the other two.

Not to say 2 and 3 were bad, but after playing through them you realize the games are pretty formulaic and always follow the same structure and patterns, like Chapter 3 always being a double kill or the way they give characters way more attention and development in the chapters they die. It starts to get easy to predict "oh, this person's dying next" when they start being proactive in conversations.

Hot take! I like Komaru more as a protagonist character than the other protags in Danganronpa!

Yeah that one's pretty much impossible to avoid if you spend any time on the internet. I also knew that going in, but there were still some things that surprised me.

Yeah, I liked Hiro in my playthrough as well. Sadly we're a minority :(

Until I spoiled it for myself cause I googled how not to suck at the Bullet Time Battle and google showed me a preview video of the BTB against her.

I thought kirigiri had a plot twist where she was a robot cos of how unemotional she was lol I believed it until near the end when it seemed unlikely they'd do that but I did think that for a long time.

I honestly thought the twist with Kirigiri was going to be that she was actually Mukuro

This is entirely anecdotal, that being said as someone who has spent some time with both the western side of the fanbase on forums and at conventions, and has been to a couple Danganronpa events in Japan it seems Kirigiri is very popular in Japan but not very liked in the west.

Honestly, I think I liked 2 and 3 better. I liked getting stuff from the Free time events. But at one point for a few chapters straight, I was only getting skill points and no new skills to use them on no matter who I talked to So it sometimes felt weird. Which is why I liked the other 2 better when it came to skills

I think 1's system was better because it incentivized you to talk to a variety of characters rather than hyper-focusing on two or three of them, especially since if you spend time with a character who ends up dying, you get absolutely nothing as a reward for the time invested with them whereas in the first game you at least walk away with a couple of skills or skill points.

It's a great series, all 3 of the main entries are a lot of fun and bat shit insane, have a blast.

I liked not knowing when a characters social link would end in one. Felt more like an actual budding friendship. Knowing each character has five event scenes in 2 and v3 creates a certain amount of checkmark approach to the whole thing.

It did the opposite for me. Like I mentioned, at one point, 8 I kept getting just skill points for talking to multiple people. So, it basically made me choose 1 person to keep talking to if I wanted to get more skills And the reward you get is learning more about characters you like. And tbf, in the other 2 games, you gets points used to buy skills every conversation So, I always felt like the prize was worth it on the latter two But thats just how I feel

That said, Im not sure why it would be bad to talk more to your favorite characters over spreading your time out with everybody (including ones you dont like)

Gotta say, I'm about tired of hearing Kyoko say "Mukuro Ikusaba".

Aw yeah. Now we're in "True Ending".

Finished the first game now. The amnesia reveal really ramps up the uh.. despair. Junko ruined a bunch of happy friends for nothing. They killed each other for nothing. I hate her, but I also love her for being a crazy-as-shit villain with absolutely no justification or tragic backstory.

At least the living kids still have hope. Even Byakuya was like "I guess you lowly peasants could bother me with your problems or whatever" lmao

It's sometimes a bit annoying how you as the player have evidence or call a reveal before the game does, but you still have to sit through 20 minutes of the characters making their way to that conclusion while you scream "No, you idiot!" but I know that's just the logic of this genre and lots of Japanese games in general.

Do you plan on playing 2 and 3 as well?

The whole series is great, but I'll warn you, IMO 2 had a very slow start. Second half of 2 is top tier tho.

I'm gonna go through both of those and Ultra Despair Girls. Just gonna take a while with me playing BG3 and whatever else is coming out.

Skip UDG imo

It's terrible writing and bad gameplay wrapped around a bunch of incredibly creepy and uncomfortable themes that feel like they should land you on a watch list

Yeah, UDG isnt worth it IMO, I would just stick to the main games.

Yeah I've heard mixed things. Just wanted the complete experience. We'll see.

I assure you that you won't miss out on anything at all

If anything, skipping UDG actually improves the series

Prefer UDG over the other games.
