once the battle starts you don't interact until it ends. The interactive part is organizing your team/items/moves before battle so that it plays out in your favour

you can skip the cutscene entirely with the + button if you don't want to watch

I checked out the demo... you just watch.

But listen... I went in wanting to hate on this game.
I was skeptical when I saw it's no input battles...

But it's actually really engaging in ways that shake things up.

Also, the cut scene animations are a bit stiff, but when you play it out you see they were designed around the battle animations, they "feel" really good and visceral, more than most JRPGs where killing mobs usually doesn't have much impact.

In fire emblem (at least the earlier ones), you simply select attack and see things play out as well. This game expands that simple "attack" into a series of conditional commands. Honestly, if we always had to fully control each unit, it would take way too long.

I already skip it most of the time and I'm nowhere near halfway through the game

it sounds a bit weird at first but if you think of it as a very long version of a battle animation from like fire emblem or whatever, it feels more normal

RTS means real time strategy as far as Im aware. If so they definitely dont all work this way.

It's an RTS that you can build a squad instead of just buying a single unit. Being a unique RTS does not mean it isn't one.

But if the battles play out without any input from the players can it really be considered real time strategy?

Any part where the characters are running around you control, just like an RTS. What you don't control are the fights, which is also the same parallel with RTS' "you don't control their weapons." The comparable to the fights here would be, say, a Marine in Starcraft firing its gun. The difference is the quantity of units (of which there are quite a few "low quantity" RTS' like this, so that isn't unique) and the pull away to a cutscene of the fight. Something that is obviously more just a byproduct of the numerics of units bogging the whole thing down than because watching a scene of the fight is somehow a difference in gameplay.

I can see the RTS aspects but I'd be very hesitant to truly call it an RTS - you spend like 90%+ of the game paused

Real time with pause is not what makes it a unique RTS, no. If you could do that in any multiplayer RTS you can bet that you would do that. In addition you can easily make the argument that there is the pause due to being on the console rather than PC as a crutch for the former's use in a controller.

No, I just really don't think it plays at all like an RTS. You never have to make any gameplay or decisions in real time, and in fact you barely even can, because almost any time you interact with the game in any way it will pause

Every time you finish a mission it lists how long you took, and I think it's usually like 5-10% of my real-time play duration

It feels about as much of an RTS as a game with ATB turns does

So your argument is that it's too much of a CRPG to be an RTS? I guess that's fine too.

i played a few like red alert and total war warhammer, and even when i placed my units against the enemy, im still constantly clicking and moving other units around and clicking skills and stuff. are there other rts games like this where you put your unit against an enemy team and you can just chill and watch the fight? im not really big with rts games.

I'm just saying I think RTS conjures a certain impression in people's minds and while you could probably argue on technicalities that it is, it's sort of diluting the purpose of genre labels

personally I would call it a TRPG

Yes. Those are referred to as "macro RTS'" because they care more about you doing resource management more than microing. An example of that would be Total Annihilation as unless you are going to cheese things (or play at an insanely high level) your micro really isn't going to matter more than just good base management.

The demo is SUPER generous too. If you are even remotely curious, just give it a go. The demo is the full unrestricted game (or at least a very large chunk of it available) with a 7 hour time limit. And demo progress carries over. I downloaded the demo on Thursday, after just a couple of hours I ordered the full thing from Amazon.

Same thing goes with TRPGs and things like the grid and absolutely no real time elements.

Just keep in mind it is "seven hours or do the big story mission" (you'll know which one when it comes up) in length. So if you want to play out the full seven then start doing side quests instead of doing the story.

Ok, I was wondering if there was a cutoff and where it was. If it's the one I'm thinking You can unlock that mission fairly quickly, but there's more than enough to keep you busy for the full 7 outside of that.

Yerp. You have easily well over 7 hours of content prior to the mission (I want to say I was around 14 on the full release + demo before I did it) but I could have gone to it about an hour and a half in.
