It's level of freedom is still impressive, and not bloated like a lot of today's open world games are. Every area got used, not a shit load of filler, tons of customization.

The sheer number of things you can commandeer is still impressive too. Ass loads of cars, planes, choppers, a jetpack, a train, all of it.

It looks dated of course, but its still fun to play.

I liked how the game sorta had a 'chapter' in each region.

GTAV sorta did this with Trevor and at certain heists but it wasn't the same thing.

Something about that structure made the game feel much bigger than it actually was. Leaving Los Santos actually felt like a big deal.

I prefer GTA V, but only slightly. Both are 10/10 game for me.

GTA V for me wins mainly because of the mission design. Switching between Michael, Trevor and Franklin is such a great addition to the gameplay and makes many missions felt "big". There are also missions that are still great despite not relying on the switching mechanic, like Caida Libre, Minor Turbulence and Burying the Hatchet. And the addition of the first person perspective is a godsend for the shooting parts.

I do have to give it to SA for having a map that, while actually smaller, felt bigger due to the diversity of the landscape. Plus, the map felt a lot more down-homey. I enjoy walking around and enjoying sceneries more in SA compared to V.

In SA, I imagine it gets a bad rap because flight school is required and it forces you to use some of the crappier planes in those lessons. The HYDRA is also the plane with the most focus and it works absolutely nothing like any other plane in the game and - if IIRC - you don't get much of a tutorial on those differences.

Though if you do know how to use it properly, you fly faster than the game loads in. I remember dying a few times because I was speeding across the map and rammed into a tree that loaded in a few seconds after I died.

Yes, I particularly loved not being able to go somewhere without getting an instant 4 star wanted level for no reason just because I wasn't far enough in the game.

You get a tutorial. If by "tutorial" you mean "a bunch of notices in the corner of the screen that you're probably too busy trying to not crash and not get shot down to read." To this fucking day, I have no clue how flares work beyond "when they feel like it"

Vice City is my favorite by far.

Having basically the Scarface story and being set in the 80s with the best soundtrack by far solidifies it as the best, bar none.

Only way they'd ever top it is with a remaster, another 80s GTA or a cool gritty 70s one.

I wish there was more downtime between its release and Halo 2's. I still beat it but I didn't do any of the extras really and it was forgotten once a Halo with matchmaking came out for the first time, and Bungie.net stats, etc. Halo 2 was too hype.

It basically uses Ace Combat's control set and the physics are surprisingly solid. Flying in GTA has always been great.

Controls are pretty wonky for SA on PC to be honest. Otherwise yeah the controls were fine imo.

I can't remember if they implemented yaw by then. But the only plane you can fly in VC is the sea Dodo, I'm pretty sure.

Unless you mean helicopters. Those have always been straightforward. It's actually impressive how quickly they nailed the flight gameplay.

That's a good point actually. The sea plane apparently was the only one in VC and it was indeed garbage.

I can't remember the actual flying missions, but the ones where you have to fly the model helicopter, I think, wasn't fun at all, IMO.

I can't remember whether it was a mandatory mission or if it was optional, though.

and while I prefer GTAV, and its main characters, SA had the GOAT side-characters.

I really dug Woozie, The Truth, Agent Mike Toreno, and that British rock band. and Officer Tenpenny was way better than any other antagonist

Vice City has a mandatory one where you plant explosives in a construction site by using an RC helicopter. SA doesn't have any mandatory RC missions.

The RC controls are always over sensitive and yeah Supply Lines is notoriously annoying. IIRC, later editions changed the mechanics to not use fuel when you weren't actively applying the throttle. In the original version, the fuel gauge was basically a timer.
